Last summer, I joked that Sundays at the Deck were my parents “reunion tour” where they hosted different friends and family every week. Thanks to the efforts of Liz & Patty, I think they came close to topping last years crowd! So grateful for family that understands, acknowledges and supports my passion. I used to think - I still think sometimes- that this person built me. Made me who I am. Showed me pieces of the world that opened me up. Spoke to me unselfishly, unbiased. Truly listened to me, saw me and encouraged the beautiful parts of me to get bigger.

Growing up teaches me I am who I am, because of myself. But Terre was the first to show me that there was a me at all. Someone with autonomy, talent and character that was worth molding, stretching and experiencing. There’s something beautiful about making your life. I’m still figuring it out. It’s a daily fight to not let the noise and “norms” of the world drown out your heart and what really speaks to you, inspires you. For the last ten years I’ve kept a weird mental marker on this day. Something created completely subjectively in my mind but felt viscerally objective. Like the rebuilding after tragedy was going to be graded at the end. And I need to pass. Or like, the weight of grief was allowed to be heavy and consuming for exclusively a ten year window. In which, I’d have to simultaneously clean up and achieve as much as I could with that weight in tow.

(A painfully stupid way to digest grief. Even more stupid to pile pressure on - I digress.)

I haven’t done any of the things I was worried I was “supposed” to have done by this date. By and large a lot of my life “looks” the same, but it’s richer in endless ways I care about. I’m the only one making it all more worthy of living. And maybe this whole time, that’s all I was supposed to learn? Maybe this whole time that’s all she was proud of? Maybe this whole time she’s been proud. Maybe I never had to worry. Maybe I have to keep listening to myself. Maybe listening to myself is the only beguiling goal post I need to conjure for the next ten years.

I’ll play music. I’ll eat dinner tonight with some of my favorite women. Mostly I’ll be shameless about how much I try to inject pieces of her into every day, just today. by @alicenrag
