Acrylic and oil on linen
206 x 162 cm Browne extends painting into spatial propositions that test the boundary between image, object and environment. RUNES examines mark-making as a fundamental aspect of human culture. Before written language humans used marks and symbols to communicate, record and interpret their experiences. The exhibition situates abstraction within this broad history, connecting early symbolic practices with those of contemporary artists and presenting visual language as something that develops across generations rather than belonging to any single moment. I’m thrilled to be included in the upcoming exhibition opening next week at White Conduit Projects, Angel: Interval Studies; Colour in Time PV Wed 23 Sept , 6 – 8:30 pm Alice Browne, Hannah Maybank, Liz Elton, Takumi Kato, Masako Yasuki 24 Sept – 18 Oct @whiteconduitprojects_london @alicerbrowne @takumikatostudio @liz_elton @hannahmaybankartist masakoyasuki Please join us to celebrate on Weds 23rd! —— Bringing together five artists who use natural materials to create their own vivid dyes and pigments for their work. —— Image: Alice Browne, Alluvia (Thulite), 2026 Rock and mineral pigments, graphite and dispersions on 425gsm paper 76cm x 56cm This is one of a series of 10 paper works made exclusively from ground rock and minerals inspired by the exquisite mineral pigments encountered during my residency in Japan earlier this year and my longstanding fascination with rocks. In Japan I observed shinto spiritual connections to nature, for example in the use of rock objects as temporary housing for kami spirits. Using the restricted natural tones presented challenges and textural opportunities. The works are built layer by layer like rock strata, displaying structural strength as well as new found liquid movement and vulnerability. The works include minerals sourced in Japan such as black Tourmaline, pink Thulite and blue Sodalite as well as Bideford Black, found only in Devon, UK. With thanks to pigment suppliers A P Fitzpatrick & Pigment Tokyo as well as Zaza Galerie who hosted me in Japan @ap_fitzpatrick @pigment_tokyo @zaza.galerie #alicebrowne #rockpigments #mineralpigments #paintingwithpigments #mineral by @alicerbrowne
