Since 2006, Alice Yard has been a conversation with artists, writers, curators, and other creative practitioners
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Join us for a screening of Cuba in Africa, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker Negash Abdurahman as we recognise the historic bonds of solidarity between Cuba and Africa!

We will also be honoring Trinidadian citizens Chad Joseph & Rishi Samaroo, who were extrajudicially killed in our waters by the U.S bombing of their boat on 14 October, 2025. We demand accountability for their murders and reject U.S militarisation in our region!

Wednesday 14 October, 5 pm at Alice Yard.

This is also part of a global historic campaign launched by the Coalition for the Elimination of Imperialism in Africa (CEIA). Libre Sankara @afroaboriginal47 will also be speaking live from Gaza.
Swipe to see donations you can bring, if you are able. We will be sending more supplies to Cuba, and persons can also contribute directly to the CEIA fundraiser.

We recognise the historical power of the arts to inspire popular action. This event aims to mobilise our people to contribute materially to the Cuban people during a time of great need, as they have historically done for us in the Caribbean, Africa, and many people around the world. We stand in solidarity with the Cuban people in their defence of their historic revolution. As Caribbean people who recognise the hard wuk of our ancestors to defeat colonialism, we know it is our duty to defend their historic advances against encroaching imperial power today. We also recognise that this struggle is connected across national borders, oceans, and continents. As our former colonisers work together to uphold and advance the systems of power and control established during their rule, we the people of the region and the world must work together to counter their power, and support our Caribbean and Pan-African family in Cuba as they defend their socialist project. taken in Alice Yard by @aliceyardinsta

So heartwarming listening to these works and hearing across continents, how sound echoes through music and language as container and conduit of living and feeling.

‘Graffiti Unleashed’

Graffiti artists over-run Alice Yard; painting murals and tags all over its walls.

In the early 2000s, roughly from 2005, there was a sudden splatter of creative graffiti in and around Trinidad’s capital. One of the earliest was ‘Louse’ but there were also the works of a wandering artist signed ‘Clinton’, the stark alien social commentary by ‘MANF’, the political works of ‘Spade’, the creative ‘WOB’, and later the prolific taggers ‘Howok’, ‘Konk’, ‘Mky’, ‘Cause’, and others, as well as Artists Sabrina Charran and Cheewah.

In August 2009 Alice Yard, a Woodbrook art space dedicated to contemporary and community art, gave its walls to some of these street artists for ‘Graffiti Unleashed’.

De Yard.

Where it all began 'bout nine years ago. Look how much time pass, eh? And look how much change too.

Happy twentieth anniversary to Alice Yard. That space in Woodbrook is a special place + time in our lives; where strangers 'come friends, and friends 'come family. For the #1000mokos project and the once-weekly 'Sticks in de Yard' sessions, that place is home.

Alice Yard's work continues in Granderson Lab and we wishing twenty more years (and beyond!) of growing communities, passions, contemporary art and artists.

Is ah Love!

Alice Yard is celebrating 20 years.
My video ‘Unease’ was the first screening at their space. I’ve included stills and short clips from the original video.

This space has always been welcoming to artists, especially young ones.

‘Unease’ was originally projected onto a cracked wall at Alice Yard in 2006 in a small enclosed dark room.

It examines the idea of the uncomfortable, with direct reference to the female subject – her body, her societal roles, and the politics of her place within the home.

The satirical eight steps to normalcy – or eight steps to being a natural or ideal woman -emotively depicts the psychological experience of several nameless female subjects, who try to fit themselves into accepted roles that they do not desire, or that they are forced to pursue.

There are ambivalent and some antagonistic representations of female tropes: The Wife, The Slut, The Mother to be, and The Girl.

Female angst is still stigmatized as “bitterness”, rather than seen as a real expression of circumstance, and a call to alleviate inequity.

‘Unease’ is a video installation that screened as part of ‘Visibly Absent’ – a series of exhibitions hosted by ‘GALVANIZE in Trinidad, September to October 2006. Projected in a very dark room, in a small concrete box, it was the first art project to be screened at the Alice Yard Space.

No end in sight
Marking 20 years // Tuesday 15 September, 2026
from 6 pm, at Granderson Lab

Dear friends and others,

Sometimes twenty years feels like a very long time, and sometimes it feels like we’re just getting started. What were we thinking? It’s not easy to remember exactly. On 15 September, 2006, when we first welcomed people into a space called Alice Yard, we probably had more questions than intentions. We were interested in possibilities, not obligations. We were curious about who would join us in conversation, in imagining, in making.

Over the past twenty years, we have made many new friends, and drifted away from others. We still feel curious. Often we’re indecisive, and that can sometimes actually be a useful thing. Often it’s exciting to think about all the things we, and others, have done in and around this space. It’s hard to make it all fit into one picture, one equation. That can be a useful thing also. We never had any end in sight. We’re still asking questions about the possibilities, and the possible meanings of, play, friendship, generosity, autonomy.

On Tuesday 15 September, 2026, from 6 pm, we’ll be reflecting on the 20th anniversary of Alice Yard, and sharing some of the objects, actions, and ideas that artists and others have made in conversation with us. Come and join us at our base, Granderson Lab, 24 Erthig Road, Belmont, for a chat, a drink, some music, and to help us remember how we got here, and imagine where we’re heading. (Sorry for the short notice, but as always we move at the speed of our own energy. Also as always, all are invited.)

See you on the 15th?

Earth Rising Volume II: Messages from the Pale Blue Dot is out Thursday 24 September 🌎🌍

Twelve new commissions from artists, poets, writers and musicians in Bolivia, France, Italy, Trinidad and Tobago, China, and the UK, celebrate the sound of rebellion, movement through grief and life beyond borders.

From glitching folk to experimental steelpan, uncanny orchestras and anthemic choirs, this year’s artists are intent on establishing common ground, whether in the unifying thud of a house beat or the ubiquitous life force of Qi.

Fifty years ago, Carl Sagan and his team sent the Golden Record into space aboard Voyager 1 and 2: a snapshot of humanity for anyone out there who might be listening. Rather than introducing humanity to extraterrestrial life, Earth Rising asks artists to make a new contribution, re-introducing humanity to itself.

This year’s artists look unflinchingly at social justice, environmental collapse and displacement, sending forth new contributions to challenge, enthral and resonate.

Featuring @clara.arnaud.ecrivaine, @_duruo_, @grubbymittsband, @mlkwd_, @nitinsawhney, @spatasar, @tarawave, @theresa_lola, @TIMPANAmusic, @tongwenmin, @tlkvox, @wenxinzhang and @zanerodulfo.
