I’m looking forward to joining the Stanford University @Healthy Living Program next week to offer a webinar on Mindful Self-Compassion for Well-Being.

Many of us find it easier to offer kindness, patience, and understanding to others than to ourselves. Yet when we experience stress, setbacks, or disappointment, the way we respond to ourselves can have a profound impact on our well-being.

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-compassion is that it lowers our standards or makes us less motivated. Research suggests the opposite. Self-compassion isn’t about expecting less of ourselves—it’s about changing how we respond to ourselves as we continue to learn, grow, and navigate life’s challenges.

We’ll explore simple, practical, evidence-informed practices that can help us bring greater awareness, resilience, and kindness into everyday life. If this topic speaks to you, I’d love to have you join us.

We are honored to spotlight Transformative Studies student Lakiba Pittman, who is performing with the John Santos Sextet March 1, 2026! Lakiba is a highly sought-after speaker, facilitator, educator, coach, consultant, mentor, and creative artist with decades of experience across public, corporate, and nonprofit sectors.

As a creative artist, Lakiba is a published poet, artist, and recording artist. Her latest book Bread Crumbs from The Soul… Finding Your Way Back Home, is a showcase featuring her original art, poetry and autobiographical reflections.

Lakiba is a featured soloist with John Santos and the Machete Ensemble on the album Africa Vol. 1, was a founding member and featured dancer and singer with Malonga Casquelourd’s Congolese Music and Dance Ensemble, “Fua Dia Congo”, and was a featured vocalist on the album “Let the Sun Shine In,” with the Sons & Daughters of Lite. Her art was recently featured along with over seventy women at The Black Woman is God art exhibit at SomARTS in San Francisco, and she was one of the featured poets at the 50th year celebration of the Black Arts Movement.

I've been waiting for a chance to post about my experience witnessing the great - Blind Boys of Alabama - who had a spectacular run at SFJAZZ recently. They are Dr. J.W. Smith, Ricky McKinnie, Sterling Glass, and Joey Williams of The Joey Williams Project. It was my first time seeing them and being in the front row was almost like being in the group .. 😃 🙌🏾 I mean, I felt so close to the music, the tones, the Spirit. It’s a true honor to be the featured guest teacher for @rickhansonphd for his Wednesday Weekly Meditation and Talk on August 13. Rick’s work has long inspired me—his integration of neuroscience, mindfulness, and compassion has opened healing pathways for so many.
