Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? I remember asking myself those questions as a child, looking up at the star-spangled sky on a sweltering August night in Connecticut. If these are questions that compel you too, you’re in the right place.

I started Align to explore the age-old and modern mysteries of life. Today the question that interests me most is: Who do we want to become – as individuals, and as a collective?

This summer I was thrust into the center of a news story I had written countless times from the detached distance of a newsroom: a 29-day wildfire emergency that engulfed Correns, my second home in the green heart of Provence.

Some 11,000 firefighters from across France and Europe were rotated in the battle to contain the Gros Bessillon blaze. For days that stretched into weeks, the darkened skies buzzed with Canadairs, Dash 8s and water-bombing helicopters, supplied by nearby lakes, private pools and the river beside our village playground. Emergency services ferried tirelessly between communities threatened by the encroaching flames. Over and over, a shrill alarm sounded on our mobile phones – “9999 ALERTE: FEU EN COURS” – ordering us to evacuate.

My family spent the days scanning the hills for signs of smoke. Reports of new outbreaks circulated on the village group chat, fanning our fears. Amid the acrid smell and falling ash, there were mornings we didn’t know if our house was still standing.

Declared “fixed” after eight days, the initial fire roared back to life 72 hours later, stoked not just by strong Mistral winds. Its cause remains unknown, but officials are investigating arson in numerous subsequent flare-ups. I was stopped by officers asking if I’d seen a white pickup with a particular license plate and warned to call police immediately if I did.

The fires tore through 63 square kilometers of verdant beauty, an area larger than Manhattan. 95 percent of the forest surrounding Correns was burned. Our property lies in the 5 percent that wasn’t touched.

Luck? Blessing? Destiny?

It took me weeks to process the experience. To even be able to talk about it. I learned a lot. About wildfires, their true causes, and what we must do to prevent them – and protect the ecosystems on which our own survival depends.

In the coming weeks, I’ll share some of those lessons and explore how we can assume responsibility by looking for solutions in our own backyards.

Today she produces her free-spirited collections in close collaboration with global artisans, supporting their communities and preserving heirloom skills. “What came about as an emotion, an idea of creating beauty, has become a way of slower fashion and empowering the artisan. Our crochet – a traditional women’s handicraft in India – is created by these ladies in their homes, so if they have a family and can’t go out to work, they’re able to create these amazing pieces in their in-between time, on their own schedule.”
