This shoot reminded me why I do what I do.

As a photographer, it’s always intimidating capturing another photographer. This is a sentiment I shared with Motaz a few times during our session. Although he’s seen the most horrific situations imaginable, when he was behind my lens, for a moment, the weight of his experiences faded, and I saw a 25-year-old kid.

When I first met Motaz, I saw that any sense of normalcy of his was a long forgotten thought. His white hair made him look older than his age. He carried himself with dignity, but with anger and sadness bubbling under the surface. My goal with this set was to capture the essence of a man, as he was. To humanize him. This shoot taught me that sometimes, it’s not about capturing a story, but discovering the person behind it.
