Bay Area Art friends! Since graduating, I often find myself reading bits of art criticism or writing alone - puzzling about the way that these writings pose challenges for my work, wondering about what painting has to say in our contemporary world, what writing can say to painting, and wishing for a way to discuss these questions with other artists. If you’ve ever felt this way about a piece of art writing or criticism, I encourage you to take a look at my “Painting Support” reading group, which will take place starting late October through @batherslibrary

Im hoping this can be a space where we as artists (I won’t be super strict about the definition of “painters”) can meet and build meaning together - by working through texts that puzzle or challenge us, by discussing our own practices and how they fit into the world, and maybe even by building a dialogue about what painting (or art more broadly) in the Bay Area can be right now.

While I have a rough idea of recent and contemporary short texts (1980s- present) we can discuss, I am very open to suggestions of texts that we would like to work through together (above image is just an example of some of my various art books, not a curriculum.)

The group will meet from 5-7pm on Wednesday evenings, starting October 28 and continuing for 4 weeks. Once we have some sign ups, we can agree on an accessible in person location that’s convenient for all members.

Very excited to try this out and see what comes of it with whoever is interested. by @alijetv_

Feeling nostalgic about my older sculptures, made in a time of deep uncertainty and without expectation, thinking of things both protective and dangerous. Even though this one has found a home far away, it’s still close to my heart. ❤️ by @alijetv_

Animal Locomotion

10ft by 5ft oil on burlap… by far the largest painting I’ve ever done, time to let it lie. This summer, in a workshop with @chastrida we were asked to explore past versions of ourselves. This brought me back to my strange obsession and dialogue with Eadweard Muybridge in college, his animals trapped and dissected in gridded technological boxes, the modernist grid, and exploring those things through collage, sculpture, and performance. I’ve changed so much, so has the work, but even though painting has its hold on me now, it’s strangely comforting to see that I can still be haunted by these old obsessions that resurface in new ways. by @alijetv_
