When things feel glum in the world it’s the company I keep that inspires me to look up and look forward with hope. I felt honoured to join @ansuya_xo and @jacquie.howard2 and their boundless energy @investec recently, learning to dream big and be bold like they are at @jozi_my_jozi

James Clear writes, “There is no path to greatness without hard work. And the only person who feels like working hard for years is someone who is excited about the task.”

I work hard. For years. Always will. Period.

Clear continues, “You only get one life and you’re going to burn the days either way, so the real questions are:

What excites you and interests you? What makes you feel curious and alive, perhaps even joyful?
What is so “worth it” that you’re not worried about the tradeoffs, the hard work, the hassle?”

My passion is certainly not to be found in my daily busyness - compliance processes, bureaucracy, admin and problem solving. Sometimes it is the academics and sometimes it is the ‘win’ for all the feels that overcoming hard things brings. Definitely, it’s fuelled in moments of laughter or times of tears.

Yes, it’s about people. But not just people. I don’t actually love public speaking, crowds or mingling but I do love validating, encouraging, comforting and motivating other hard working human beings. When I can’t speak, I write to express a better way or I think and strategise to hope for a dream come true.

What motivates, inspires and drives me, is a deep longing to do all that I can to give other people opportunity. My joy bubbles up when I see family, friends, colleagues, organisations, society even, step out and step up to take it. To find their next and go there. THAT is what excites me.

This ‘grab the moment’ photo is a visit by a past pupil - a magnificent human being, navigating his career pathway to find what excites him. And to layer on meaning, to live a life of purpose.

With his story and those of others’ in mind, I happily hit my inbox and report reading today! No hassle at all.

In my ‘season of life’ I get to sort out cupboards and reminisce in the glorious winter break from school! No hunting for new playgrounds and holiday art classes for the little ones for me anymore! My reluctant but cathartic tidy up this year threw out the sweetest memories of my younger mothering years. I loved these holiday times. The days were long and sunny. Time to be bored was an indulgence we undervalued.

According to my son’s journaling, our family was ‘made of love’. Big release of working mum guilt as I read this!

The amble through these precious archives got me thinking. Parenting with warmth does not mean letting everything slide.

It means holding the line with clarity, consistency and connection.

One Feuerstein inspired tool I love is the search for optimistic alternatives.

When something is not working, we do not stop at the problem. We help the child find the next possible response.

Instead of:

“Don’t hit.”
“Stop running.”
“Don’t shout.”

Try giving the child an achievable alternative:

“Use gentle hands.”
“Walk inside.”
“Try that again in a calm voice.”
“Feet stay on the floor.”
“Food stays at the table.”

The difference is subtle but important.

We are not ignoring the boundary. We are showing the child that there is another way.

Another response.
Another choice.
Another possibility.

That is optimism in action: not pretending everything is fine, but helping a child discover that a difficult moment does not have to stay stuck.

And on tired, ordinary parenting days, our language can stay wonderfully simple:

Clear. Calm. Kind. Firm. Safe.

Watching this work of art birthed held my full attention. I knew it would be special but I don’t think I anticipated how my delight would bubble as much as the molten bronze at 1200”. A labour of love by Robert Leggat, a magnificent lion emerges … an emotional moment for me, personally and as the principal lucky enough to receive this unique gift to the school. I can’t wait for it to stand proud in its place in the sun! by @alimscott

These are the good days - Scott on the big screen.

A sobering and potent story that deserves to be told. Kudos to the makers, the players and the visionaries for ensuring that it’s seen and heard and honoured. 👏👏👏
