What to do in New York this June?

The New York Times has included “Out of Silence” in its article on “33 Things to Do in N.Y.C. in June”!

Experience Hans Rosenström’s (@hans.rosenstrom) sound installation, curated by Alina Girshovich (@alina.grsh), at Four Freedoms park (@4freedomspark) on Roosevelt Island. The exhibition is open through June 21.

Inspired by the music of Arvo Pärt and the architecture of Louis Kahn, the piece was created in collaboration with the vocal ensemble @voxclamantis.ee.

Out of Silence is generously supported by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation; the Ministry of Culture of Estonia; Saastamoinen Foundation; The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland; the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY); and the Consulate General of Finland in New York.

We’re proud to present Out of Silence, a sound installation by Hans Rosenström (@hans.rosenstrom), curated by Alina Girshovich (@alina.grsh), now open at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park on Roosevelt Island through June 21.

Inspired by the music of Arvo Pärt and the architecture of Louis Kahn, the installation was created in partnership with the vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis (@voxclamantis.ee). Speaking to the power of the human voice and the importance of silence and presence, the work unfolds as a spatial journey through the park, encouraging visitors to move, listen, and connect.

The opening reception on April 28 was sponsored by @longdrink, @marimekko and @kyrodistillery.

This April, “Out of Silence,” a sound installation by the artist Hans Rosenström (@hans.rosenstrom), curated by Alina Girshovich (@alina.grsh), will open at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park.

Inspired by the music of the composer Arvo Pärt (@arvopartcentre) and the architecture of the Louis Kahn-designed minimalist monument, the installation offers New Yorkers and visitors alike a moment of solace and reflection.

Created in collaboration with the vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis (@voxclamantis.ee), “Out of Silence” speaks to the power of the human voice, a sound emerging from within that reaches outward to connect and permeate another’s space. Entering the installation evokes a sense of belonging, and, much like Pärt’s music and Kahn’s architecture, creates a contemplative space for connection within an often disconnected world.

“Out of Silence” will be open April 29 through June 21, 2026.

“Out of Silence” is generously supported by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation; the Ministry of Culture of Estonia; Saastamoinen Foundation; The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland; the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY); and the Consulate General of Finland in New York.

“We all know that we’re changing inside our heads. Quickly. Too quickly. Until recently people were simply people. Now we’re turning into something else. We all feel it. We all know it.”
(Obrist, Basar, Coupland, The Extreme Self)

“It’s Complicated, Is Possibly Art,” an exhibition I curated, presents a series of works by Elias Wessel that invert the digital space, playing with the seemingly non-corporeal and magical forces shaping our experience. Through images, text, sound, and technology, the exhibition gives visible, audible, and physical form to the orchestration behind the scenes, and the resulting fragmented nature of language, communication, and identity. Can our perception of reality and ourselves really be trusted?

The exhibition title is taken in part from Wessel’s work cycle, It’s Complicated (2019–2021), which includes a series of images, audio, and text produced using social media, the photographic process of long exposure, and AI-based recognition technology. The works on view at 1014 bring into focus the overlapping, obscure fragments of information floating through our lives, blurring our ability to construct clear meaning. The accompanying audio (Is Possibly Art) and text pieces (Textfetzen) from the work cycle are interwoven through the two-story exhibition space, giving a multi-dimensional view into the changing structure of language and communication. Works from Wessel’s series, Deepfakes, Quick Response and Schöne neue Welt–The Moving Images, also on display, ask the viewer to re-examine the digital tools we use daily.

A sound installation includes a commissioned piece by Natalia Kiës, composed using the computer-generated raw audio of It’s Complicated.

On view @1014nyc through September 23.

On Tuesday, September 20, join us for a talk on art, tech, and the brain with Professor of Neural Science and Psychology @wendy.suzuki and artist @studiosuehuang (Sue Huang). Link in bio.☝️

These are a few of my favorite things...
Come see them all in “Extraordinary Things,” an exhibition I had the pleasure of co-curating and producing, showcasing the video work of #eliaswessel, @paweldaishin, @christina.kelly.9461, and @captain_courville, and the brilliant sculptural treatment of objects by @heidihankaniemi, @ideasintopictures, @helloharl, @spencermerolla, and @christina.kelly.9461

“Extraordinary Things,” an exhibition of sculpture and video on view @gowanusdredgers Saturdays in October, displays past and present objects that we use and discard in order to challenge our perception of the familiar, and reframe the meanings we assign to the material culture that surrounds us.

Assembly Required, a collective of artists, curators, and writers that I am delighted to be a part of, aims to reach a shared understanding through multiple perspectives - told through objects, stories, and experiences.

If you missed the eventful weekend of #gowanusopenstudios2021, and the brilliant performances by Rosamond S. King, Jamie Courville, and Domenica Bucalo, you can still see all Assembly Required exhibitions on view this Saturday, October 23 and Saturday, October 30.

The other Assembly Required group exhibitions are “Unnatural Histories” at Footnote project space, and “Nest” at Artpoetica. Find them at 543 Union Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

For more information on the spaces, exhibitions, and all of the participating artists, visit: www.assemblyrequiredart.com
