I am not going to lie, it is bloody hard to keep going with steady conviction when you are building on your own.

With my CTO sadly stepping away, the runway money running out dramatically fast, and seeing other startups with fun and engaged teams getting large investments secured, whilst I am still at a Product Market Fit stage, suddenly hearing someone you really respect and admire say:

Oh Alina! This is genius! This is EXACTLY what we needed - yes please let us pilot your product!

THIS. This moment has been so difficult to get to.

And I know it’s just the beginning and I am yet to prove so much to so many people before I can call it a success, but having a genuine reaction like that has been an incredible morale boost and validation that my efforts aren’t wasted.

In this video the 11am version of me is on the way to that meeting thinking ‘surely this person will see the value of The Reals’ and the 7pm version of me already know that They Bloody Did!!!

The difference is only one meeting. But it is so much more.

Left my phone on the bed, came to pick it up, realised my hair looks like a lampshade from the phone’s POV.

A mentor recently told me that resourcefulness isn’t about having all the answers (it would have been nice to have them though!), but mostly about pattern recognition.

Taking a step back, shifting perspective, and connecting dots that don’t seem related on paper.

If you come from a creative background, like me, you probably see the patterns already. But I’ve learnt it’s a also skill which means it is improved with practice.
So now I HUNT for patterns.
Turns out, once you ask your brain to spot connections, you can’t unsee them.
I’m already seeing how this fun practice translates directly into solving problems and finding creative workarounds for my startup, The Reals.

1: You don’t automatically own your code, even if you have access to it.
Under UK law, whoever writes the code owns it. Not the company. Not automatically.
Is your co-founder coding since day one?
If they haven’t signed a formal IP assignment, they still own what they wrote.
Investors will find this in due diligence.
So if you haven’t done it, get everyone to sign IP assignment on day one. Before they write a line of code.

2: Non-technical founder? You still need to know your tech.
You don’t need to code.
But you need to know:
- Where your code actually lives, it should be on a company GitHub account, not your developer’s personal one
- Who has admin access
- What your stack is
Ask your developer for these details if you don’t already have them. If they don’t share, it’s a flag.
Because if you can’t answer the above questions, you’re fully dependent on someone else. If they leave, you could lose access to your own product.

Day 160-something and the truth is it’s not a very instagrammable reality.
It’s all about emails, meetings, reaching out to tons of people and hoping for the best. I started the day in my gym gear thinking I could squeeze a session at lunch time, but was glued to the chair and forgot to eat.
Didn’t do school pickups, did not see my children today, and husband is responsible for making dinner (he is the main chef of the house, thank god for that!)
The laundry pile is still on the sofa, but that’s ok.
One day at a time.
