why am I saying “no” at the end? 😂 not that i am a rude person: that same morning, a man we didn’t know bought him an ice cream to the kid, while we were waiting in line at the shop. then the lady on the street gave him cookies. then a couple selling figs gave few “try try this”. by the time we got invited in for coffee and sweets, this child (who just started eating sweets by 3yo) had already been fed one day by half the neighborhood. Balkans remind me so much of Central Asia: same hospitality, warmth, long “small talks” and instinct to feed everyone. except here it’s much fewer kids around here, so when one appears, gets lots of attention. by @alinazivanovic

one of the questions I get surprisingly often from fellow Kyrgyz is: “how did you convince your foreign husband to give your child a Kyrgyz name?” our kid’s name was actually his suggestion. he first heard Kubat when he met a friend of ours and loved both the sound and the meaning: strength, energy, power, calories. and the guy: kind, funny scientist into sport and environment, a wonderful person, dad and husband. Kubat is also a name shared by people I admire: filmmaker Aktan Arym Kubat, and my friend and former colleague Kubat Kasymbekov, whom I associate with principled journalism and freedom of expression. science, cinema, journalism all the things we love in one name. perfect! but I understand where the question about convincing a man comes from (patriarchy? colonialism?) in Central Asia, naming a child can still be something where the father or his family decides, or their opinion carries more weight. it's also a culture, where minorities living in Kyrgyzstan would name children in Russian, not in their own languages or in Kyrgyz. due to many reasons, history it is, opression, dominance, etc. and with a male partner from Slavic nation, maybe I am expected to fight for my heritage in the marriage. gladly, I don't have to. he celebrates mine, I do his, hope kid will manage to love both, preserve both languages, visit our countires even though I spoke Russian more, learned it deep and wide, and betetr than Kyrgyz, I couldn't imagine passing that one of my native languages to the kid if I had to choose one. and i had to choose one, because there is English and dad's language. speaking Kyrgyz to my child, being called апа / apa, and giving him a Kyrgyz name always felt natural to me. but that’s my context, not a judgment of anyone else’s choices. names and languages come with different family histories and realities. where you live, what languages your relatives speak, where your child will grow up, and even your own experience of carrying a name can shape what you choose. by @alinazivanovic

closing my IPI chapter, and with it one of the things I loved most about my time as Innovation Projects Manager: Media Innovation Europe. together with partners at BIRN, Thomson Media and The Fix Foundation, we worked to support independent media with funding, mentoring, training and space to experiment: to test new products, strengthen their organisations, find more sustainable ways to serve their audiences. gonna miss our all-women monthly Media Innovation Europe Consortium meetings, and once again year MIF in-person catch ups! Our son’s superheroes. This is MA 48 — Vienna’s municipal department, running waste collection, street cleaning and the city’s entire vehicle fleet. 🧡 The visual identity: Their orange uniforms, bins and trucks are so recognisable that “the 48er” has become a brand of its own. 🎩Comedic approach: MA 48 runs humorous, sometimes provocative campaigns pushing waste separation and cleanliness. My favourite featured magician duo Siegfried & Joy, making the point that trash doesn’t vanish on its own. 😂 Jokes on 21,000 bins: the logic is simple: “the more eye-catching the bin, the more likely people are to actually use it.” Slogans are crowdsourced and voted on by the public. A few gems: “Bin für jeden Dreck zu haben” (“I’m up for any bit of dirt”) and “Ihre Papiere, bitte” (“Your papers, please”). ♻️ Second life for stuff: they run a secondhand shop where things people toss get sold on instead of landfilled. Vienna’s aiming for 100% recycling of unavoidable waste by 2050, with the whole system going net zero by 2040. 🔥 Heat from trash: their Spittelau plant (you’ve probably seen the wild Hundertwasser building) burns waste to heat over 60,000 households a year. 🧸The merch: MA 48 sells miniature bins, T-shirts, children’s books, a Mistmonster and even an orange rubbish truck made from LEGO components. 📱Instagram: theyalso run one of the funniest municipal accounts: @die48er. 🚛 And the main thing: their 13 waste collection centres get around 2 million visits a year and handle roughly 180,000 tonnes of material. #ma48 #die48er #viennawothkids taken in Vienna, Austria by @alinazivanovic

converting in one of the tallest countries in the world. if i did believe in an interventionist god, i wouldn’t ask them to leave me as i am. i’d ask to make me much taller. (or richer, so i could afford the front rows) Nick Cave was basically the third parent to our kid (along with Đorđe Balašević and Gulnur Satylganova) from his very first month, my husband would carry him to sleep while singing or playing “Into My Arms,” “O Children,” and others. he’d relax and switch off from the very first notes. he is three now, and on hard nights, it still works. so was wonderful to celebrate three years of parenting with #NickCave live in Belgrade. taken in Belgrade, Serbia by @alinazivanovic

also, the fixer of everything. The person who can paint a house, build a shelf, fix a car — and a dough. Who can meal-prep for a week, and spend an entire week perfecting one special meal for me or the kid. u know groceries down to ingredients, ingredients down to macros. u pay attention towhat a friend is going through, what your siblings or mine might need, what makes a kid laugh, or our parents smile. researcher of all things kid: shoes, bikes, diet. maker of appointments, taker to all doctors, explorer of playgrounds. bedtime songs and books specialist. the person who knows an unreasonable amount about basketball, tennis and MMA (and will never admit it). reader of all things history, equality, kid and dog parenting. u notice things. u take care of things. u remember, u remind, u communicate, apologize and keep me accountable. warm, happy, free. principled without losing empathy, kind without being naive, generous while holding boundaries. always grounded, so there is a space to float, dream, experiment. srećan rođendan, туулган күнүң менен, @nemanjacomedy! ❤️so good u exist, please keep existing for long, živele, жаным! taken in Finland by @alinazivanovic
