Ten years ago, I was standing by the magazine shelf at work when the call came.
“Papa est parti, ma chérie. Je suis désolée.” I knew I only had a couple of minutes before losing it, so I phoned my boss: “My mum called. My daddy is gone. I have to go home…”

As I got into a cab, reality hit me like a ton of bricks. And somewhere there, along Quai d’Orsay, I felt my heart break.

My dad was a man from the North with Mediterranean wit. He was smart as a whip, a free spirit, and an adventurer. He never cared for anything fancy, yet he was always the most elegant person in the room.
You’d be foolish to think that losing someone so monumental would get easier over time.

But life goes on, and you often wonder how.

Ten years without you, Papa. It’s hard to move on or move forward. But you’re everywhere now. I will love and miss you forever. by @alinelatifi

One of the most recent photos of you that I like, and the first picture of us that I could find on my phone. We met eight years ago today at Le Mary Céleste in Paris. Little did I know then about the Albanian guy from L’Oréal. It was one of the warmest days of the year, and I had no idea what to wear to meet you. We spoke in English until I discovered you were (fluent in) German.

Since then, I’ve learned so much about you, but you still surprise me every day. I’ve come to know the parts no one knows about. I’ve learned that you lost your home the worst way, but your memories are filled with a beautiful childhood. I’ve seen your incredible stamina and how you work twice as hard as the others. But I’ve also learned that when something no longer feels right for you, you know how to walk away. And I’m proud of you for that.
