Last month on December 15th, my short film GHOSTS got finally released and is currently streaming on @nowness 🙏🥹🌸. It was the original short I made with the support of @filmedienrw between 2019 and 2020, but I never released.

That journey eventually became the feature film @invisiblepeople.film that is currently available in cinemas. I’m very happy that GHOSTS is now out as well — it works as a kind of teaser and entry point into the world of the feature essay.

“GHOSTS documents my first encounter with Tokyo’s Butoh community in 2020–2021. This unreleased short film later developed into my feature film debut INVISIBLE PEOPLE, exploring whether cinema can capture the transformative moment of Butoh – bodies becoming vessels between worlds.”

Connecting with artists from Tokyo’s Butoh community, director Alisa Berger offers a trance-like meditation on the experimental art form for the short film GHOSTS – featuring performers Norihito Ishii, Tenko Ima, Seiji Tanaka, Yoshito Ohno, MUTSUMINEIRO, Yuri Nagaoka, Ooshikanosuke, Momoko Mei, Seisaku, and Kana Kitty. Capturing their distinct aesthetics and glacial choreography, Berger employs original music by German composer Simon Rummel, and intimate camera angles to carry the visual language of Butoh to film, drawing viewers to a sense of disquiet, and the liminal space where transformation takes place.

Invisible People ist eine vielschichtige Darstellung des einzigartigen zeitgenössischen japanischen Tanzes Butoh, der sich in den Schattenzonen zwischen Revolte, Erotik, Trance, Gebet, Ahnenbezug und körperlicher Anonymität bewegt. Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm umfasst eine Reihe gefilmter Porträts von Butoh-Tänzer:innen, wobei er Yoshito Ohno, dem Sohn des Butoh-Begründers Kazuo Ōno, besondere Aufmerksamkeit schenkt. Dabei verbindet das Werk Elemente aus Tatsumi Hijikatas poetischen und philosophischen Texten über Butoh mit Lebensgeschichten verschiedener Protagonist:innen und einer geheimnisvolle Suche nach den „unsichtbaren Menschen“. Alisa Bergers Filmdebüt lässt aus der Erkundung von Butoh ein dringliches und atmosphärisch dichtes Gedicht über das Leben entstehen.

Invisible People (Regie: Alisa Berger) feierte Weltpremiere beim Filmfestival CPH:DOX 2024. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Prix Studio Collector, Best Experimental Film beim Istanbul Experimental Film Festival und dem Prädikat „besonders wertvoll“ der Deutschen Film- undMedienbewertung (FBW). Der Film wurde von Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains (FR) in Ko-Produktion mit FORTIS FEM FILM (DE) produziert, unterstützt durch das FilmLab .Düsseldorf (Filmwerkstatt Düsseldorf).
