Guest edited the latest @domino newsletter, which mostly means I got to talk at length about our kitchen renovation, closed storage, my love for British designers like @studioduggan @emma__ainscough, and the satisfaction of an outlet you cannot see. Two books about books I recently thoroughly enjoyed!!! RECEIPTS FROM THE BOOKSHOP is a truly charming diary of a bookseller in a tiny seaside bookstore in the UK. The author, Katie, also writes what is probably my favorite newsletter on Substack - I view it as my end of a long week treat.

SOPHIE, STANDING THERE (out 9/29) is Meg Mason’s latest, about a woman who works as a sound technician at a literary festival. It’s an exploration of loneliness, art, opening yourself up to connection…another beautiful book from my favorite author. If you’re a book lover you will enjoy this - lots of funny Easter eggs with real authors’ names dropped and such. My full review is up on my newsletter, and an interview with Meg Mason is coming in October!

FAMOUS MEN by Julie Buntin (4/5 ⭐️)
I finished this book this week, and I am still processing because there was so much to chew on. The writing in this book blew me away with sentences so sharp on nearly every page. If you enjoy well-drawn characters, you will love this book; the protagonist evoked so much frustration and empathy in equal parts that I’ll be thinking about her for a long time.

The premise, in short: Wilhelmina (“Will”) is the daughter of a single mom from a small Michigan town who dreams of becoming a successful writer. She travels to New York City to find a famous poet from her hometown, Nathaniel Fellow, whom she believes is her father. She connects with Nathaniel and soon becomes entangled in his dazzling literary world—and their relationship turns into something complex and even grotesque. Did Will escape her humble beginnings only to become trapped in something else entirely?

The book explores ambition, power, art, parent/child relationships, and complicity. Read this if you’re looking for something that’s cerebral, might give you the literal ick (several passages made my stomach turn), and doesn’t provide any easy answers. This would be a perfect pick for a book club as it’s ripe for discussion. by @alisharamos

WHISTLER by Ann Patchett (❤️ Loved it)
This tender book will be a crowdpleaser. I read and loved Patchett’s The Dutch House and Tom Lake, so I had high expectations for this one. It did not disappoint!

Whistler is about a woman named Daphne, a 53-year-old schoolteacher who takes a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art one day with her husband. After a while, they notice an older gentleman following them. Her husband decides to confront the old man, and the puzzle pieces from Daphne’s past begin to click together: she knows this man. His name is Eddie Triplett and they shared an impactful, albeit brief, time together over forty years ago when she was nine. The museum becomes a metaphor for observing the artifacts of their shared history in a new light.

The novel unfolds from there as these two characters suddenly find themselves back in each other’s lives even after so many years apart.

If you loved the quiet charm of Tom Lake and enjoy a hopeful family drama, you will love Whistler. It is about childhood, it’s about aging, it’s about fathers and motherhood and communal healing. It’s about…life, which is what Ann Patchett is so dang good at writing about.
