I’ve started to think of the Bows as an ongoing practice more than a finite series. I’ve been making them for 4 years now because they are not an exploration of a single idea, but a way to express, moment by moment 1) a feeling state (the initial, half-blind, pencil drawing of a bow shape) & 2) raking lines as in a zen sand garden or like slow-movement improvisational dancing (where does my hand want to go?). The color choices is where things get complicated, but we can talk about that another time ;).

If you’ve been to my studio you’ve seen the piles of cut-up paintings all over my floor. I paint, cut up, and then move around these piles — spreading them out, making a mess, and then organizing them back into piles. They function as “found objects” for the new Constellation works, in which I place groups of them on wooden armatures, as data points picked out of the multitude and placed in relation to each other.

Fruit is better than cake (has been my personal take).
And it’s important.

From a poem by Czeslaw Milosz (and the title of my solo show at Albertz Benda in NYC): “To put at the edge of the abyss a table, and on the table a glass, a pitcher, and two apples” —-
Fruit in the face of impossible things — an act of simple, stubborn humanity in the face of catastrophe.

A bowl of fruit is an anchor.
