#theylive John Carpenter consistently described They Live (1988) as a documentary, not science fiction, in multiple interviews. In a 2015 Yahoo News interview, he stated, “It’s a documentary. It’s not science fiction.” He reiterated this view in a 2020 Esquire interview, clarifying that while there isn’t a literal alien invasion, the Reaganite philosophy of unchecked capitalism and greed has taken over America—making the film’s themes deeply real. He likened the ruling class to “specters in American life,” referencing figures like the Koch brothers. This perspective underscores the film’s role as a social and political critique of consumerism, income inequality, and media manipulation, rather than a fictional alien tale. by @aliusvenom
