Last month I was talking to a friend about life, and they said, “I think you should come out and camp in Colorado.” Without any hesitation, I started booking my trip out there. After I figured out the dates that would work, she told me, “oh, I get to ring the bell for my cancer treatment on Tuesday”, and I was planning to go out there on Thursday so I immediately changed all my plans.

I flew in on Tuesday, got picked up from the airport, and we immediately headed towards the hospital. I wasn’t quite prepared for what happened next. I don’t like shots. I don’t like hospitals, and that’s just me being self-centered around my world. But I was exposed to a community and a world that I don’t understand. Watching my friend ring the bell was probably one of the most emotional things I’ve ever been through in my life, but beyond that seeing the people who surrounded her and were there for her while holding the phone, listening to her mother and brother face time from 1800 miles away was an experience I’ll never forget. Somehow it came up “what do wanna do now? you wanna climb the incline?” It may or may not have been my suggestion, and who ever made the decision would be argued about for the rest of the day. Arriving from sea level with about four hours of sleep, I said fuck it, this is your day, we’re here for you. We proceed to sit in traffic and drive two hours south while I slept because I was exhausted from the trip out. When I woke up, we were in Manitou Springs. I looked at the others in the car and said, hey, listen, “I may die on this climb, but I can’t bitch out, She just beat cancer.”

What followed was an experience of life and living that I will never be able to put words to…..

Today marks a year since I started chemotherapy. The fastest and longest year of my life.

While going through the hardest part of treatment, the only things I shared were the positives that kept me going.

A year out, I think it’s important to share the hard, dark truth about breast cancer treatment. I hope my story can help someone in their journey.

With early detection and advances in modern medicine, many people can avoid the harshest parts of treatment I went through, having found my cancer at stage 3.

Self examine, spread awareness, and please don’t wait.
