☄️✨I SHOULD BE OBLITERATED | Downtown Urban Arts Festival 2025⁣
*** sappy thoughts below, because i don’t keep a diary ***⁣

Last fall, I was probably having a quarter-life crisis. Then, my super told me he didn’t care if carbon monoxide killed me in my sleep. Luckily, being a writer means I can monetize my pain (well, try to), so I started brainstorming a play. Not long after, I saw that DUAF was accepting submissions for 30-minute shorts, and I decided I was going to write the play that weekend, pour all the ways I was feeling sorry for myself, all the things I was wallowing about, and all the lies my brain was telling me into it; then, I wouldn’t be allowed to think those things anymore (don’t take this as psychological advice, but it did kind of work). I wrote in a style I have always wanted to but have never fully committed to, let myself write indulgent monologues, and decided not to care about cliches (I put an asteroid in it, then there was an actual asteroid scare, then 911: Lone Star did a finale asteroid so I wasn’t allowed to laugh at it and that was hard). ⁣

I somehow got into the festival, got wonderful and helpful feedback from reg e gaines and — I’ll say it — visionary director Michi Zaya that made the play so much better, then got to hear incredible actors who understood the characters and the dark humor and even called it “fun” read it. Michi, TuQuyen, Alfredo, and Maria are all so brilliant and so amazing to work with (I’ve told them all this too many times) and were able to take what could have been a very annoying play and make it funny and relatable and interesting. Also, they got to scream, which was really exciting. ⁣

It’s a little silly how sentimental and proud (eek) I feel about this, given it’s a 30-minute-long play that had one performance in a festival, but it is the first time I’ve had solo-written work rehearsed and performed outside of a school/educational setting and I had a ton of friends and family (traveling from out of town!) come to see it and give a standing ovation and say very very nice things to me about it, so it does feel very special. ✨ by @alivincitore
