My eyes, Your eyes
Your eyes, My eyes

In my works, I approach tension between seeing and being seen. The work considers gaze not as a neutral act, but as a force that shapes self-awareness, vulnerability, and power. I am interested in how perception functions both personally and socially: how looking can become a form of control, and how that can alter the way we move through the world.

My thinking was shaped by objects I encountered in Florence, particularly displays at Museo La Specola and the Museo Galileo. In both spaces, I was struck by the way bodies (human and non-human) were presented for study, inspection, and consumption. Those displays revealed how vision can isolate, expose, and transform living subjects into objects of scrutiny. I use that relationship as a metaphor for a broader experience of being watched and interpreted.

Your eyes, My eyes uses text to confront the viewer directly while also resisting immediate legibility creating tension between the piece and the viewer.. Rather than offering a fully visible statement, the piece asks the viewer to negotiate meaning through effort, uncertainty, and implication. Text is embedded through subtle brushstrokes and shifts in light, making visibility contingent on the viewer’s position and attention. In doing so, it shifts attention away from simple reading and toward the pressure of observation itself.

Your eyes, My eyes exists in dialogue with My eyes, your eyes, where the inversion of the phrase extends the tension of the gaze and complicates who is looking and who is being seen. Ultimately, the works reveal the psychological weight of the gaze and its power to shape one’s sense of self. taken in Firenze, Italy by @aliza_moon
