Looking back, my body was trying to tell me something was wrong long before I was diagnosed with celiac disease.

These were the 5 biggest symptoms I had in the year leading up to my diagnosis:

• Extreme fatigue — no matter how much I slept, I was always exhausted.

• Painful and irregular menstrual cycles — I had never struggled with my periods before, then suddenly the pain became so severe that I would miss class and end up sitting on my shower floor at 2 a.m.

• Hair loss — my hair barely grew for over a year and became noticeably thinner.

• Migraines — I started getting random migraines out of nowhere, despite never having issues with them before.

• Constant bloating — nothing seemed to digest properly. My weight fluctuated, and I constantly felt uncomfortable after eating.

At the time, I never would have connected any of these symptoms to celiac disease. I thought they were all separate issues.

Now looking back, they were some of the biggest signs that something wasn’t right.
