What happens when pregnancy, birth and motherhood take place behind prison walls?

Just published in The Practising Midwife Australia, this powerful and thought-provoking article by Professor Laura Abbott, the first professor specialising in maternal health and criminal justice, explores the realities of pregnancy, birth and motherhood in prison.

Drawing on her groundbreaking Lost Mothers research, Professor Abbott examines the experiences of women giving birth in prison, being handcuffed during labour and facing compulsory separation from their newborn babies.

From Australia to the UK and beyond, she highlights profound inequalities, important policy developments and the continuing challenges faced by women following release from prison.

And what about midwives?

Professor Abbott challenges us to consider our professional and ethical responsibilities to advocate for women, confront harmful practices and provide compassionate, trauma-informed and culturally safe care, wherever women give birth.

Pregnancy should never mean losing the right to dignity, safety and respectful maternity care.

An essential read for midwives, students, educators and everyone concerned with reproductive justice.

We are excited to read this book! Just investigating availability.

Repost! 👇🏽

Thank you @sabcnewsonline for such important review Ways of Being Born : Tracing the footprints of birth in Africa.

Here Dr Motsei connects the critical role of the father/mother, lineage, land and the placenta.

A very special thanks to @liezlewilson . We appreciate the manner is which you held this conversation. Reiterating that the book is not denouncing biomedicine nor solely advocating for indigenous medicine but making room for the convergence.

IT’S COMING!

We want to let you know about the forthcoming November issue of The Practising Midwife, themed ‘On the Edge’, it explores how midwives are thoughtfully extending the boundaries of practice, grounded in safety, evidence and professional responsibility.

In this issue, we hear about the role of a diversity, equity and inclusion midwife, and multidisciplinary education that brings professions together to learn.

These stories show midwives responding creatively to needs that existing systems were never built to meet. Our profession evolves with the women, people and families we care for, and asks us to grow alongside it.
Where do the boundaries of your own practice sit, and what might be possible just beyond them?

Whether you are a student midwife, practising midwife, educator, academic or researcher, this issue offers evidence, reflection, practical tools and inspiration to strengthen your learning and practice.

Join All4Maternity from just £8 per month to receive the November issue, alongside full online access to The Practising Midwife, our journal archive, CPD resources, exclusive member content and much more.

The New Statesman: Future of Healthcare Conference.

Day before the budget.

45 minutes on Women’s health and maternity safety is never going to be enough, nor is it a solely women’s issue.

There was some good stuff in there (mainly Laura @the_birth_advocate ) who was a bloody triumph and so composed in the face of some absolute stinking BS that I want to call out.

You’ll forgive me when I was incandescent with rage at @helenmorganld and Baroness Geeta Nargund saying most women have “excellent maternity care”.

If you define most women and birthing people and their babies surviving in this dumpster fire of a system then yeah sure, that’s accurate.

Again Helen Morgan - midwives dealing with more complex births” did you mean more unnecessary iatrogenic harm?

Back to Geeta
Pervasive normal birth ideology ❌ Proven to be false stop listening to @jeremyhuntmp
We need a social media campaign to essentially stop these naughty freebirthers 🥴 Gurl, please.
Homebirth teams being closed for safety ❌ FALSE
Homebirth only appropriate from low risk and Obstetricians can get there in time to save the day❌ FALSE

She did acknowledge that suicide is the leading cause of death for women in the first year after birth so “something is going on”. Yes, something definitely is going on.

It’s not rocket science guys- Dismantle the unevidenced obstetric model of maternity care, implement the evidence of continuity of midwifery care models, fund maternity properly instead of litigation claims and listen to women, birthing people and midwives.

To quote @drsarawickham

“We have more than thirty years of reports and evidence showing that our current system of maternity care is based on flawed assumptions about the female body, physiology and birth. We know that many current practices are based on fear, tradition and convenience, rather than evidence.
We know that women and babies have better outcomes and experiences when they have individualised care from a known midwife.”

Props to Dr Petra Simic for giving Laura the floor when she had 1 minute left. Well done to Laura for being so articulate and well done to me not shouting B*LLSHIT at the top of my lungs. by @all4maternity

For several years, Weleda and @All4Maternity have worked side by side, united by a shared belief in holistic, woman and person-centred care and the importance of supporting childbearing women, people, newborns and families naturally through pregnancy, birth and beyond. Our partnership has grown organically, built on mutual respect, aligned values and a deep commitment to health and wellbeing at every stage of the maternity and perinatal journey. Both All4Maternity and Weleda champion a whole-person approach to health - one that recognises the connection between body, mind and emotional wellbeing. From the very beginning, this shared philosophy made collaboration feel natural. Whether supporting midwives, expectant parents or new families, our work together has always been guided by the same intention: to enable evidence-informed choices, nurture confidence and place trust back into natural processes.

Anna and Sheena Byrom, midwives and co-founders/owners of @all4maternity are now fully fledged Weleda Advocates! Being an advocate means we’re part of a wonderful community, a dedicated space created to support midwives, students and doulas. We receive expert-led content on all Weleda products, invites to exclusive online and in-person events, product recommendations and more!

We’re inviting you to find out more…and to WIN AN ULTIMATE SELF-CARE BUNDLE.

Consent in childbirth must be freely given. Saying “no” must never mean losing care or support.

This important article in The Conversation by Bashi Kumar-Hazard, @hannah.dahlen and Kate Brewer explores women’s rights during childbirth in Australia, and how pressure, coercion and disregard for informed consent can contribute to birth trauma.

Its message deserves our attention - women need clear, honest and unbiased information about proposed interventions, their benefits and risks, and the alternatives.

They need space to ask questions, consider their options and make decisions without pressure. Agreeing to an examination or intervention because care is being withheld raises serious concerns about whether consent is freely given.

For those providing maternity care, a woman declining a recommendation should open a conversation.

Compassionate care means listening, exploring concerns, respecting decisions and continuing to offer skilled support.

The article also highlights the importance of trusting relationships and continuity of midwifery care. Women should emerge from birth knowing they were heard, respected and involved in decisions about their own bodies.

A must read for everyone working in maternity services.
