There have been a lot of recent discussions framed around surveys regarding the low percentage of people who report reading for pleasure (not for school or work). However, many of those surveys also report that the majority of people want to read more than they currently do.

So the real takeaway might not be about whether people want to read or not, but about finding better strategies to help individuals incorporate reading into their lives more easily.

In 2022, I wrote an article about the reading habit I’d built over the previous four years. I’ve since written a new one that includes those strategies along with others I’ve picked up since.

If you’re looking to read more than you currently do, I hope this article can help give you some ideas towards that goal. Link in Bio. by @all__ofit

Billie Jean King has a well known quote that says “pressure is privilege,” but she has another quote that I’m often more drawn to which is “champions adapt.” In my latest post, I share a story from Wimbledon in 2008 where King shared this perspective with a sports director who was frustrated with their circumstances at the time. King’s simple advice of “champions adapt” reminds us all that no matter what we are faced with, this call to action can apply. See link in bio for the full story. by @all__ofit

A year ago (to the day) I started writing on Substack and the first article I wrote was The Performance Equation. The Performance Equation is a framework I have used to help explain multiple components that I believe are foundational to performance.

Performance has often been thought of as being the direction result of preparation such that:

Preparation = Performance

My take is that this framework is not necessarily incorrect, but it is incomplete.

Instead of a direct input:output function, I see performance as being:

Preparation + Opportunity + Execution = Performance

Regardless of the circumstances, we are all prone to making overly optimistic predictions. One of the explanations for this tendency lies in the psychological phenomenon know as the planning fallacy. In my latest post, I discuss the details of it and how it applies to the realm of sport and performance. Key components are included in the slide deck but full details can be found through the link in bio. by @all__ofit

Last year, while I was traveling overseas, I wrote down my thoughts on managing jet lag going into a race, particularly when working with a compressed amount of time and a fairly large shift in time zones. Many athletes may be entering the phase of their season where extensive travel is required; hopefully some of these ideas might be helpful in that pursuit. When I went back to school, I applied a version of a strategy I learned from Jim Collins of using a stopwatch to track how I spent my time. I eventually came to find that the use of a stopwatch was less about time management and more about setting aside the time to do Deep Work. Link to full article in bio. by @all__ofit

Swim…Bike…Run…

Yesterday was the GAME ON! Ponte Vedra Beach Triathlon, offering both a Sprint and Olympic distance event. I participated in the later and was fortunate enough to have a solid day and break the tape.

However, the day started off a bit hectic when my shifting was completely dead as I went to do a warmup spin. Not sure if I had time to troubleshoot, I called @wendyfejfar to save the day. Being a close, hometown race, she was able to quickly bring out my old TT-bike. I switched my nutrition and computer over, and just had time to get it racked before heading down to the start.

We had a fairly rough water swim and strong north winds on the bike, but the weather was beautiful for the run.

My mind just went into autopilot and I focused on a good smooth day and I was fortunate to ride some of the final six miles of the bike, and the bulk of the run pushing with the sprint-distance winner, @austinrstory .

I still truly feel there is no better training for an A-race, than finding a shorter, local race to go through the paces. Plus, it helps support your local race directors and the overall triathlon scene!!! Thanks coach @justindaerr for working this into the final Ironman Jacksonville build for me!

Also, thanks for the 🎥 to @rossrunz , @jensylva and @weareneutralservice !!!

Now, get out and go race!!!

Over the years, I have asked many different athletes a form of the same question. That question asks: what is a race that others may not have taken much notice of, but is one that you are personally very proud of? The answers I have received over the years have often involved stories of perseverance, where athletes may not have come away with victories, but they know they absolutely maximized themselves on the day. A few years ago, I asked this question to an athlete and after they shared their answer they tuned the question on me. The answer I gave is detailed in my latest article. Link in bio. by @all__ofit

Many athletes* train extremely well and then struggle to compete.

Justin Daerr and I chatted in Episode 21 about this concept around his performance equation:
🧮
Performance = Preparation + Opportunity + Execution
📊
We often emphasize the preparation of the physical fitness and skills, yet our mental tools like emotional regulation, awareness, and self-talk are also big contributors to that execution piece. Are we able to capitalize on the work we’ve done?
