Directing for the very first time was definitely a challenge. I’m so used to being the one in front of the camera, trying to portray a character—but this time, it was different. I had the honor of leading an amazing team on my film, and just seeing everyone on set, ready to bring my story to life on the big screen, made me feel like the luckiest 5’6” Nigerian in the world.

Writing these characters and watching the actors take them, make them their own, and bring their individual styles to each role was beautiful. It was incredible to see them still learning more about who they were becoming when I said “action,” and who they returned to when I said “cut.” Sometimes, they even had to tell me who these characters truly were—which is wild, because I’m the one who created them (W press).

My crew, led by @ian.jo_, was outstanding. We had only three people on set, but their commitment and presence meant the world to me. Over those four days, I learned a lot from Ian—not just about how to be a boss, but how to be a leader. The way he works during production is exactly why he’s the best cinematographer I’ve ever seen. From quality to setup, focus, and even the jokes—he’s got it all.

He and @noahrose_okoji5 gave me the hustle and drive to keep improving, to be better than I was before I committed to film. I’m so grateful to both of them for giving me the chance to do what I’ve always dreamed of doing.

JJ is the best assistant director ever. I acted as a clown for her, and she told me it was actually her first time directing—but you wouldn’t have guessed it. For her first time, she did absolutely fantastic. She’s also a really talented writer, and I seriously hope I get the chance to work on any future projects with her.

Ashlli, Nas, and Joey are amazing actors and truly knew what it meant to embody their characters, I hope other directors out there utilize their strengths and perseverance to be the stars that they already are.

This project made me angry, sad, stressed, annoyed, and, most importantly, happy. No matter what emotion I was feeling, it was all part of the process, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
