Hi, I’m Allegra šŸ‘‹

Wildlife photographer, explorer, conservation storyteller, and someone who still can’t quite believe that taking photos of animals became my career.

Photography has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, but the path to becoming a full-time photographer was anything but straightforward. Somewhere along the way, a deep love for science, conservation, storytelling, and the natural world all collided—and here we are.

These days, you’ll usually find me somewhere wild, camera in hand—often underwater, sometimes in the rainforest, and always ready to observe whatever nature has to offer.

More than anything, I hope my work helps people see the world a little differently—to feel more connected to it, and inspired to protect it.

I am endlessly grateful to have found a calling that allows me to be a steward and advocate for the wildlife and wild places that have given me so much.

Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or you’re just finding your way here, I’m really glad you’re here šŸ¤šŸŒŽ

I usually post wildlife with a purpose—to tell a story, spark curiosity, or inspire people to care a little more about the wild places and animals that share this planet with us. And I still hope this photo does all of that.

But lately, the news has felt especially heavy… and honestly? Sometimes a cute leopard can just be a cute leopard.

No deeper meaning. No call to action.

Just a young leopard disappearing into the tall grass, being impossibly cute, and reminding us there’s still beauty in the world.

Today, that felt like enough šŸ¤šŸ† by @allegrahutton

Nothing can fully describe the intimacy and trust of this moment—the moment I sparked the curiosity of an orca calf, and he left his mother’s side to come investigate me. And somehow, she trusted me enough to let him.

It still makes me emotional to think about the trust and curiosity these brilliant animals have. They know what we are. They know what our species has done to theirs, and to countless other species in the ocean. They know what we’ve done to their home—and yet, they didn’t approach me with fear or animosity. They approached with curiosity.

To be trusted by a wild animal is something I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted. Moments like this remind me how much we still have to learn from them—not just about the ocean, but about curiosity, trust, forgiveness, and perhaps even love.

I hope I never stop being humbled by that. taken in Baja, Mexico by @allegrahutton

"Sometimes the best moments are the ones you’re convinced you’re going to miss. šŸ“ø

It was my first day back in Antarctica last season, and we were met with essentially whiteout conditions. The snow was blowing sideways, visibility was almost non-existent, and I remember wondering if we were going to see anything at all.

And then, out of the white, we stumbled upon this little chinstrap penguin perched on an iceberg. It was such an unexpected encounter — and somehow, the starkness of the conditions made it even more magical. A tiny penguin surrounded by an endless world of snow and ice, completely unfazed by it all.

This ended up being one of my favourite moments and favourite sets of images from the entire season. There’s something about the simplicity of it that feels so quintessentially Antarctica." - Allegra Hutton (@allegrahutton)

Scorched earth šŸŒ

"There are few things more exhilarating than watching a herd of wildebeest come thundering down a mountainside. I photographed this moment in South Africa early one morning, just after the mountain had been intentionally burned as part of a conservation effort to control overgrown foliage, restore the landscape, and create space for native plants to thrive again.

As the herd came charging down the slope, they kicked up clouds of dust that caught the soft morning light. Against the smoky haze, their silhouettes almost seemed to disappear and reappear as they moved through the landscape.

I knew immediately that this moment belonged in black and white — the simplicity made the movement, texture, and sheer energy of the scene feel even more powerful. What I love most is the story behind the landscape.

Conservation isn’t always about preserving a place exactly as it is. Sometimes, restoring an ecosystem means intentionally changing it to give native species the opportunity to flourish again." - Allegra Hutton (@allegrahutton)

"For a few seconds, the world seemed to stand completely still. šŸ‘€

I was walking through the hills just outside Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia when Petaka, an affectionately named puma and remarkably successful mother, chose to make an incredibly close pass by me.

For years, she has roamed these hills, raising cub after cub into the next generation of successful pumas. There’s something powerful about knowing that the animal standing in front of you has not only survived here for so long, but has played such an important role in shaping the future of her species.

I stayed kneeling, barely breathing, as she walked past. I managed a few frames before I completely forgot to keep pressing the shutter. I was simply overtaken by her presence, fierceness, and beauty.

Sometimes, even as a photographer the camera becomes secondary to the experience itself." - Allegra Hutton (@allegrahutton)

Next in our guest series with #WPY62 photographer Allegra Hutton (@allegrahutton), we're taking a look at king penguins! 🐧

"It’s almost impossible to comprehend a place like St. Andrews Bay. Towering mountains rise dramatically behind the shoreline, their sheer scale making the landscape feel almost otherworldly. But, as incredible as the scenery is, it’s what fills the beach below that makes this place truly unforgettable.

St. Andrews Bay is home to the largest king penguin colony in the world. Thousands upon thousands of penguins gather here, stretching across the landscape in a sea of black, white, and orange. No matter how wide I went with my lens, I couldn’t capture the sheer scale of it. And this is just one small glimpse of South Georgia — a remote island that is considered one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

From its immense penguin colonies to seals, seabirds, whales, and the life thriving both on land and in the surrounding Southern Ocean, it’s a place that feels almost impossibly alive.

Standing among that much wildlife, surrounded by mountains and ocean, is the kind of experience that makes you realise just how much there is left in this world worth protecting." - Allegra Hutton

"Swimming through a lake filled with thousands of golden jellyfish feels like something out of a dream. šŸ’

This was one of the most surreal experiences I’ve ever had underwater—and one that required a surprising amount of patience and care. Before getting in, I made sure to remove all lotions and sunscreen, which can be harmful to the jellyfish, and left my fins behind so I wouldn’t accidentally damage them.

I moved incredibly slowly, constantly adjusting my position to avoid bumping into the jellies around me. And, surprisingly, I wasn’t doing it to avoid being stung. I was doing it to protect them. These golden jellyfish have evolved to be relatively stingless because they have no natural predators in the lake. Over time, they lost much of their need for that defense, creating this incredible ecosystem where you can swim among them without the fear you might expect.

Being surrounded by thousands of living, drifting organisms — and knowing that my responsibility was simply to move gently through their world — was a pretty profound reminder that sometimes the best way to experience nature is to slow down enough to let it exist undisturbed." - Allegra Hutton (@allegrahutton)

Polar bear portrait šŸ¤

"There’s something humbling about photographing a polar bear on foot in its own territory. In Churchill, I had the incredible opportunity to experience these bears not from behind a fence or through a window, but out on the tundra, sharing the landscape they call home.

Being on foot in their presence is both exhilarating and deeply grounding — you’re reminded very quickly that you are a visitor in their world. Churchill is a particularly important place for polar bears because it sits along Hudson Bay, where the ocean begins to freeze each winter.

After spending the summer on land, fasting and living without easy access to their primary food source — seals on the sea ice — the bears gather here each fall, waiting for the ice to form so they can return to hunting. But that wait is getting longer. As sea ice forms later and later, polar bears are spending more time on land without access to the calorie-rich diet they depend on. Every extra day matters.

Photographing this bear so intimately, I couldn’t help but think about how much is at stake. My hope is that a portrait like this can do more than show you a beautiful animal — it can help you feel connected to one. Because the more we see these bears as individuals, the harder it becomes to look away from what’s happening to their home.

If this portrait makes you feel something, I hope you’ll let that feeling become action. These bears need the ice. And they need us to protect the future they depend on." - Allegra Hutton (@allegrahutton)

meet @sonyalpha’s first zoom fisheye lens šŸ‘€

I’ve had the absolute honor of trying out Sony’s brand-new FE 8–14mm F3.5 Fisheye G lens for the past couple of weeks, and I’m impressed, to say the least!

While wildlife photography is now my primary focus, surf and skate photography played a huge role in how I got my start. So, with this new fisheye in hand, I decided to bring it back to my roots—and this lens did not disappoint.

The 8–14mm focal range gives you both a full-frame and circular fisheye in one lens, with a 180-degree field of view that allowed me to get incredibly close to the subject while still capturing the full environment. It’s also remarkably lightweight and compact while delivering fast autofocus and incredible image quality.

But beyond the specs, my favorite thing about this lens is what it inspires: the freedom to experiment, see differently, and get creative as an artist.

Thanks for letting me try her out, @sonyalpha! Can’t wait to get my hands on this lens again soon and take it underwater 🤪 by @allegrahutton
