Who are the best defenders of Chinatown?

Chinatown Advocacy Meeting (CAN) is organizing a Chinatown All-Candidates Meeting for University-Rosedale (Ward 11) and Spadina-Fort York (Ward 10)!

📅 Date: Saturday, October 17
🕘 Time: 2-5 PM
📍Location: Cecil Community Centre (58 Cecil St)
✅ RSVP: https://tinyurl.com/Chinatown-Candidates-Meeting
(Registration link also in @chinatownadvocacynetwork s bio)

Through a community priorities survey, we asked residents and community members what issues matter most to them. One overarching theme emerged: Protecting Chinatown from displacement.

Three core issues rose to the top:
1) Keeping small businesses affordable
2) Protecting tenants and affordable housing without displacement
3) Creating more affordable spaces for nonprofits, co-ops, artists, and other community organizations

We’ve invited community experts to speak to these issues and share what’s at stake for Chinatown. Candidates will then have five minutes each to respond to the issues raised and share how they would address them.

💖 Care and Access 💖
- CAN has arranged for consecutive interpretation in Mandarin.
- Snacks and light refreshments will be provided.
- Cecil Community Centre is fully wheelchair accessible.

🙏 This all-candidates meeting is supported by @voicethevote.ca micro-grant taken in Cecil Comunity Centre by @allflowersmahjong

Learning how to play Mahjong?
We teach Hong Kong Mahjong!
Please arrive promptly at 8PM to secure a teaching spot. Teaching begins at 8:30PM. Teaching is first come, first served, with 40 spots available.

Already know how to play Mahjong?
We teach Hong Kong Mahjong, but you’re welcome to play whatever variation you prefer with our tiles, or bring your own tiles! At 8PM, 10 tables will open for open play. The remaining tables will be used for beginner teaching starting at 8:30PM. Open-play tables are first come, first served. Our players are a mix of beginners, intermediate, and advanced. At 10PM, ALL Mahjong tables will become open-play until 1AM.

Please note that open tables may transition to winner-stays-on as needed depending on the waitlist. Be mindful of people waiting around to play and share the space! What’s winner-stays-on? If there’s a waitlist, three players rotate out after each game, making room for new players to join. We encourage everyone to share their name, pronouns, and experience level when joining a new table.

There are no point minimums at open play tables! Point minimums are determined by who you’re playing with and are consensus-based.

Gambling is strictly prohibited at this event 🙏

This past Sunday at Huron Square, the sounds of tiles clacking, lions, drums, shared snacks, and dreaming together filled the air.

ACAB MAHJONG 👊🀄 was an intergenerational gathering rooted in the possibility of other worlds 💖

What happens when we dream beyond the carceral? Beyond policing, prisons, and punishment? Worlds where safety comes from each other, keeping our eyes on the streets, where our communities have what they need, and where gathering itself can be a small act of joyful refusal.

Co-hosted with Rainbow Dragon Mahjong, we raised a net total of $745, with $372 going to @torontocommunityjusticefund and $373 going to @policingfreeschools. Receipts on the final slide.

🙏 Huge shoutout to @xingdancet and Wenli Spa for sharing and letting us take up space in front of their storefronts.

🙏 Thank you to Chinatown Community Lion Dance Club and Inner Truth Taiko Dojo for dancing and drumming in solidarity with us. 🥁🦁

🙏 Massive gratitude to @itsok.world for lending us chairs and tables. 🪑🪑🙏🙏

And we really couldn’t have made this happen without everyone who donated and showed up, in big and small ways. Shoutout to the peeps who ran the welcome table, taught Mahjong, grabbed snacks, drove the U-Haul, translated for an aunty or uncle who stopped by, helped set up and pack down, brought friends, pulled up a chair, and stayed awhile.

This is what collective care can look like.

Thanks for coming to play with us 🀄❤️‍🔥!! taken in Chinatown, Toronto by @allflowersmahjong

ACAB MAHJONG 👊!!

Come celebrate the long weekend with outdoor mahjong at Huron Square on Sunday, September 6th from 1-5pm!

10 tables (2 teaching + 8 open play) + some special guest performances 👀

Drop in & pay what you feel 😎

As summer comes to an end, we’re feeling incredibly lucky to have a club that keeps showing up week after week, event after event. All Flowers is rooted in feminist values of collective care, sharing knowledge, and solidarity with struggles against displacement, colonialism, imperialism, racism, and oppression, here and everywhere.

Thank you to everyone who keeps building this community with us, one table at a time 🫶

Net proceeds from ACAB MAHJONG will go to:

🍉 @torontocommunityjusticefund

The purpose of the Toronto Community Justice Fund is to raise and distribute resources for community members living in the Greater Toronto Area who are facing legal and other financial repercussions stemming from the criminalization of their Palestinian liberation and solidarity work.

🏫 @policingfreeschools

Policing-Free Schools is a community-based organization that is dedicated to catalyzing systemic changes and a paradigm shift for the co-creation of transformative, healthy, equitable, life-affirming, liberatory, healing-centred and policing-free educational spaces.

ALL FLOWERS MAHJONG
Founded in 2024, All Flowers Mahjong is an inclusive, grassroots social club in Toronto’s Chinatown where people gather to play, learn, and share a love of mahjong. Rooted in the East and Southeast Asian diaspora, we create a third space that brings together generations across cultures.

As a feminist club, we recognize that culture and community are shaped by the realities of people’s lives. From Turtle Island to Palestine, we stand against colonialism, imperialism, racial capitalism, displacement, and genocide, and move in solidarity with struggles for liberation.

We believe strong communities are built locally, one table at a time. All levels are welcome.
