Snippets of the mural in progress. Mapping out details, blocking in colours and detailing. Slowly the image is emerging. Pulling from the beauty of the Ōtepoti landscape ❤️ The thanks to artists: @maackiyil @ekmvirtualstudios for dropping in to pick up a brush and keep me company 💕 by @alliaking_
Excited to share that over the coming weeks I am working on special mural piece for a place that is dear to me. This is my first time working on a canvas of this scale. 9 x 2.3m. 8 panels in total. So there is a bit of shuffling involved to prep, prime and map out the outlines and lock in the base colours. A huge amount of faith has been placed in my hands. I prepared a rough mural sketch to discuss ideas and feedback but this is a ‘trust the chef’ approach and I feel this is where I can do my best work. Leaving room for the alchemy to happen ✨ Thanks @craigb_264 for whipping up the wall panels 🙏🏽 And my baby who danced on the panels to imbue good vibes 💕 And @larahattingh_jpeg for that little paint on the lid tip👌🏽 #hoiho #yelloweyedpenguin #dunedinnz #otagopeninsula savethehoiho by @alliaking_
Finito! by @alliaking_
I recently had the pleasure in working alongside mural artist @larahattingh_jpeg (lead artist) and the gang @maackiyil @asyiokin A special thing to connect with other creatives. Share stories, love and support ✨❤️💕 Thanks for popping through @atfreshperspectives always good to see you! This mural is down below @asterdunedin café in the heart of the Dunedin Botanical Gardens ❤️✨ Magic to work with the girl gang 🔥🔥 and learn about Lara’s alternative approach to gridding. A method to scale up artwork. Numbers and swirls are a lot more fun than lines and it keeps bystanders wondering whether you’ve cracked the matrix 👾 by @alliaking_
Dad ❤️ by @alliaking_
This year my Lola is turning 90 so I felt the need to paint her portrait. This painting is informed by early memories of her singing, dancing, collective being, home food and a love of shine and dazzle. I also remember the endless time she spent tending to the home and planting vegetables in the garden. As a child it was exciting to dig up peanuts and sweet potatoes from the ground to then boil or make into ginataan (stewed in coconut milk). I’ve placed an excess of round local fruit around the bowl to manifest a wish of prosperity. Santuls and kalamansi ✨❤️ by @alliaking_
Material Investigation Exploring basketry and weaving, not only as medium and technique but also as a practice that embodies time, labour and repetition. I love this innate urge my children have to engage with the woven vessels, incorporating them into their play and interacting with them in unexpected ways. by @alliaking_
10 Days left to make your submission to NZ parliament (July 2nd deadline) to oppose the National’s Conservation Amendment Bill. If the bill passes 60% of conservation land will be open for sale and exploitation by private enterprise. The submission link is in my bio. Or alternatively google: Conservation Amendment Bill Submission. A submission takes less than 10mins. No need for a polished pre-scripted submission. Make a cuppa and write off the cuff to express your opposition. This land is always worth protecting. Check out @forestandbird for further details. Including detailed maps on land outlined in the amendment. This is the beautiful Stirling falls in Milford Sounds. Majestic and highlighted as a region that will be affected by the Conservation Amendment bill 💵💵💵 by @alliaking_
