Chevy Perry is one of the courageous mothers walking through the halls of the Capitol fighting for the right to hug her child. If you believe all children deserve to hug their parents even if they are in a juvenile hall comment “HUG Act” and let’s change the law.

VICTORY: AB 1932 — THE CRISES ACT 2.0 — HAS BEEN SIGNED INTO LAW!

This is what years of organizing, advocacy, persistence, and community power can make possible.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1932 (Elhawary) into law on Sunday, September 27, renewing California’s C.R.I.S.E.S. Grant Pilot Program 2.0.

We thank Assemblymember Sade Elhawary for carrying this legislation and every impacted family, organizer, advocate, and community organization that fought to move it forward.

This victory matters because people in crisis deserve care, connection, resources, and support — not an armed response.

For too long, people experiencing mental health crises, substance use, homelessness, intimate partner or community violence, and other emergencies have been met by systems that can escalate crisis instead of resolving it. Communities have been building another way: responses rooted in healing, dignity, de-escalation, and community leadership.

AB 1932 represents another step toward making those alternatives real and sustainable across California.

But we also know legislation alone is not enough.

Now we fight for the funding. Now we fight for implementation. Now we make sure community-based organizations and people most impacted are at the center of what comes next.

And we honor the families whose loved ones were taken by state violence. Their organizing, grief, courage, and refusal to stop fighting have pushed California toward something different.

This victory belongs to the movement. And the work continues.

Thank you to our co-sponsors and partners:

Domestic violence is everywhere, but it is not inevitable. It’s healable and preventable, and the data backs that up.

On Sept. 24 at 11am PST, we’re bringing together the people closest to the numbers and the people turning them into action. Swipe to meet the panel →

Last Saturday we had the honor of welcoming acclaimed artist and Black Panther icon Emory Douglas join us for the official opening of the Assata Freedom and Liberation Center.

Assata reminded us that it is our duty to fight, our duty to win, and that we owe each other love and protection in that fight.

The center is a safe haven for community, for art, for organizing, and for the ongoing work of self-determination in Southeast San Diego.

We were honored to break ground alongside:
🎨 Emory Douglas — Minister of Art and Culture for the Black Panther Party and visual architect of liberation
🏛️ Monica Montgomery-Steppe — San Diego County Board of Supervisors, District 4
🏛️ Henry Foster III — San Diego City Council, District 4
🎭 Derrick Banks — San Diego Black Arts & Culture District Committee
📚 Dr. Daniel Widener — UCSD Professor & Pillars of the Community Board Member
✊🏾 Professor Khalid Alexander — Founder, Pillars of the Community

Right now children in juvenile hall do not have the right to physical contact with their loved ones when they come to visit. It’s shameful. Youth in Los Padrinos juvenile hall wrote the Hug Act (AB 1646) with me to change this. Today our bill passed out of the Assembly with bipartisan support.

CRISES Act 2.0 (AB 1932) passed both houses and now it’s heading to Gov. Newsom’s desk. Your voice matters more than you think: write him a letter and ask him to sign it so mental health crises are met with care, not criminalization.

We need a system that responds to crises with care, not punishment.

For too long, mental health crises have been met with police intervention when what people truly need is compassion, care, and trained crisis response.

"I felt i saw them and they saw what we all are."

“The universe was right on time for all of together.”

“I left with a feeling of big love inside, like a totally different vibration.”

These are just a few of our reflections after two gatherings in California with transformative justice and decarceral practitioners from across Northern and Southern California!

Together, we facilitated our Compassionate Accountable Conversations (CAC) training and a CAC Intensive for returning participants.

We are deeply grateful to @allianceforbmoc for making these gatherings possible, and to everyone who showed up with openness, vulnerability, and a commitment to mutual accountability.

Thank you for trusting us with your stories and for making this an experience we’ll carry with us ♥️ by @allianceforbmoc

It’s really something special when the swing space is filled with youth advocates-shoutout to the people in the building who always make sure our young folks feel welcome and remind them they belong in the halls of power.

Special thanks to @grandpa_xolo for making the YOUTH Day shirts happen, Ruben “SBEE” Garcia for the art, and @dafna_gozani for the design.
