I miss my best friend, the best dad, Dan the Man. My dad had this way of making every one of his friends feel like they were his best friend. He always answered the phone when a friend called, and he always helped when someone needed it. My dad was the kind of friend that would be your one call from jail. Not only because he would bail you out, but because he always seemed to know what to do. I miss calling my dad to ask him what was wrong with my car when it made a weird noise, or how to file my taxes, or the best way to cook a steak. There are so many more questions I wish I could have him answer, but I do my best to think of what he would say.

Today I should be celebrating my dad’s 67th birthday with him, but instead I am celebrating it for him. Happy Heavenly Birthday, daddio. I miss you more and more every day. 💜 by @alliemayer

The best thing that ever happened to me was having you as my dad.

The worst thing that ever happened to me was losing you.

My Dad, my best friend, the funniest person I will ever know, my wine drinking partner, my personal chef, my favorite racecar driver, the life of the party, the dancing queen. How am I supposed to live without you? I don’t know. But I will, because I want to make you proud and keep telling your stories that I heard a million times. (I’d give anything to hear every one of them one more time).

I am who I am because of him. I have always been my father’s daughter - from my sense of humor, my hobbies, my taste in music, my go-getter tendencies, and basically my whole face (If I had a dollar for every time I heard “you look just like your dad!”) It’s no wonder we were two peas in a pod, since I was basically a mini-him. I’ll miss him every day for the rest of my days. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over feeling like I was robbed of so many years with him. It breaks my heart that we won’t make any more memories together, but I will cherish the ones we have forever, and thankfully there are a lot. Thank you for being the best dad ever.

I love you forever, Daddio

One month. You left this Earthly realm, one month ago. Even though I still feel your presence and I see the signs you’re still with me, I’ve never felt so sad before. But instead of just saying how deeply sad I am, I want to share some things my dad taught me. So here are some lessons from my dad:

- always do the cool shit you want to do, even if there’s no one to do it with
- don’t half-ass anything
- there are things to save money on, shoes are not one of them. Buy the nice ones.
- be generous with your time, your money, and your wine
- treat yourself to a nice dinner out once in a while, or more frequently than that if you’re able to.
- fill up your car with gas before it gets to the 1/4 mark (sorry dad, I still struggle with this one)
- work hard, play harder
- keep in touch with your friends. Seriously, pick up the phone and call them.
- listen to albums from beginning to end, in order, the way the musician intended
- play music often and loudly
- laugh often and loudly
- go out to eat by yourself, sit at the bar of course.
- become a regular at said bar if possible.
- Be nonjudgmental
- If you want something, do what it takes to go get it.

I take your lessons with me every day. 💜 by @alliemayer

You got 23,914 days on this Earth.
I was lucky enough to be part of 10,809 of them.
I’ve spent 364 days missing you, and I will spend however many more I have on this Earth doing the same.
I love you, Dad 💜 by @alliemayer

Among the things my Dad left for me was this adorable chaos monster, Kynsi. I promised him I would take care of her, so I’m officially a dog owner now. I hope my dad is happy watching us adventure together 💜🤍 taken in Montana, USA by @alliemayer

I turn 30 tomorrow. I’m not excited about it, but not because of the reasons you probably think. 30 will be the first year of my life my dad is not alive for. Time keeps moving forward, but it brings me further away from the time I could still call my dad and have him answer. Further away from the time I didn’t understand such profound grief.
They say time heals all wounds, but maybe that’s just because time makes us forget. If that’s the case, I’d rather stay broken forever. I don’t want to forget a single thing. I want to remember every conversation, every story he ever told, the way his voice sounded in real life, not just on a 3 second voicemail (but thank God for those 3 second voicemails).
My dad said his 30s were his favorite years - I thought they’d be mine too. I will still find joy in and amongst the sadness, but damn do I wish I could do my 20s all over again.
“Is it over?” “Yep” “can we do it again?” 💜 by @alliemayer
