days away from submitting my thesis !!! just wanted to share that last week was my field’s main conference (int. conf on new interfaces for musical expression, NIME) and that it brought me a very deep joy to see my work (pelinski et al 2024 !!) deeply read and engaged with in @lucystrauss and @lpatriciacadavid ‘s papers; thank u friends for what i see as my biggest achievement in my thesis (my modest influence on ur outstanding work!!). also prof anna huang told me she’s made all her students read the paper —- thank you thank you thank you .

i know it’s shameless to be proud of one’s own work so publicly but writing this monster has been my main activity for so long i honestly don’t care. birthing this work, writing this thesis, and trying to stay afloat during this time (writing the thesis out of funding, with a part- time research fellowship, applying for n jobs and grants, chairing a conference track, co-authoring new work; to name only the academic stuff) used all neurons, energy, serotonin, dopamine, whatever brain chemicals i had left. i don’t think i can make a happy post about my phd achievements without acknowledging how i struggled through the process, in particular over these last 6 months. please join me in being happy that it is almost over!!!

(this is not a phd acknowledgements post, i’m not ready to write those yet. but i thank @adambarkley and mamá every day for putting up with it, for giving me the space i needed to digest all the ugly phases i’ve been through with this — this work is theirs too!) by @allienski

Teresa Pelinski @allienski is a final-year PhD student at the Augmented Instruments Lab @augmentedinstrumentslab at Queen Mary University of London. Her PhD is the first to be sponsored by Bela, and as part of her research she has been exploring how neural networks can support creative practice on embedded systems.

During an initial internship with Bela in 2023, Teresa began developing **pybela**, a Python library that allows real-time communication between a C++ Bela program and a Python script or Jupyter notebook. This makes it easy to send and receive data while your Bela code is running, very useful for machine learning pipelines, as well as for any data-driven experiments and real-time performance.

pybela encourages a different kind of AI practice. Instead of large black-boxed models trained on massive datasets, it supports a more experimental, embodied approach: working with small, custom datasets and creatively engaging with the constraints of embedded hardware. This plays to Bela's strengths of design for low-latency and real-time interaction.

Final batch of videos from the 2024 Embedding Algorithms workshop: this time a performance by @zoonslows on Slow Qin and @alberto.decampo on Non-Trivial Musical Instrument (NTMI); then an #AbsoluteRelativity collective performance involving members of the audience; and and finally the closing performance by @adampultz on Feedback Actuated Acoustic Bass (FAAB) and @allienski on modular synth and machine learning models.
👆 Link to video playlist in bio 👆
The event took place in July 2024 at @udkberlin , we brought together a community of artists, researchers, and practitioners and had a great time discussing the practice of embedding algorithms in the arts with presentations, exhibitions, and performances. my parents bought this car back in 1998, when i was a few months old. it never broke and they never bought another car. in 2026 it won’t be able to enter the city but i hope i can keep it. the car in which you grew up should have its own grave to visit. volkswagen passat wine red, your parents at the front listening to whatever classical music and you sat at the back in your child car seat with your own cd player that stops playing when twisted too hard. i love you car, and i love mamá y papá. 🚗
