La Sagrada Familia (Barcelona 1882 -now) is Barcelona’s most renowned symbol, with its delicate towers punctuating the sky with grace. Gaudí knew he wasn’t going to live to see this great project finished, but probably didn’t expect it to take this long, either. If it feels like it’s been forever, well, it has: the cathedral has been under construction for over a century…and counting.🏗️

Fun fact: it will be finally finished in 2026, to mark the 100 year anniversary of Gaudí’s death.🎉

Fun fact of the fun fact: it got already delayed 🤦🚧

La Persistència de la Memòria (Portlligat, 1931) is one of Dalí’s most iconic paintings, his “hand-painted dream photographs”, as he called them, with a landscape inspired by the painter’s childhood in Catalonia. And while many hypothesized that the inspiration behind the famous melting clocks was the time relativity theory, it turned out it was actually a wheel of Camembert cheese melting in the sun. 🕐🧀☀️
Fun fact: Did you notice there’s a self portrait of the painter there? Look closely!

Las Dos Fridas (Coyoacán, México, 1939) was the first large-scale work done by Frida Kahlo and is considered one of her most notable paintings. While the two Fridas display plenty of differences and symbols, with a strong duality, both of them come to us with an open heart – quite literally. ❤️🌱

Sad fact: Could you guess its initial selling price? The National Institute of Fine Arts of Mexico City acquired it in 1947 for the equivalent of about $1000 – and that was the highest Frida was ever paid for a painting during her lifetime.

The Thinker (París, 1882) is one of Rodin’s most iconic sculptures and still prompts reflection today, as more than twenty versions of the sculpture shine bright in different museums around the world. Will we ever know what he’s thinking about? 💭

Fun fact: The thinker was initially The Poet: he was initially conceived as a much smaller statue and a crowning element of The Gates of Hell structure, inspired by the Divine Comedy, as the statue was supposed to represent Dante. It was only in 1888 that he went on for a solo career.✨

Leonardo da Vinci painted La Gioconda (Florence, 1503) with a few tricks in mind: from her elusive smile to the unmatched landscapes behind her, the artist’s genius shows up in every single detail. But it wasn’t until it got stolen in 1911 that it really got famous: a former employee from the Louvre Museum reportedly wanted to return the painting to Italy and, in turn, brought record visitors to the museum. 🖼️ 📸

Fun fact: a whopping number of replicas of the painting exist in some of the most prestigious art galleries of the world. In 1955, when a Salon des Faux was held in Paris, up to 63 versions of the Mona Lisa were exhibited. 😱

The Sistine Chapel (Vatican City, 1508-1512) – originally known as the Cappella Magna (Great Chapel) for pretty obvious reasons, this masterpiece took its current name from Pope Sixtus IV, who had it built between 1473 and 1481. Michelangelo painted the whole thing quite reluctantly and deemed the initial plan of representing the 12 apostles as a bit too weak, so he ended up depicting more than 300 figures from the Old Testament instead. That’s commitment. 🎨🔥

Fun fact: Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel all by himself, lying on his back on 20-meter high scaffolding, for 2 years. Now who’s complaining about their office chairs? 🪑✨ taken in All In Pixel by @allinpixel

David (Florence, 1501 AD) is surely one of Michelangelo’s most famous works, braving the weather and receiving its admirers under the Tuscan sun.☀️

Fun fact: his existence has not been easy – from the stone hitting by the Medici fans, to a few strikes of lightning all the way to the man who hammered one of his toes in 1991, David seems to be everyone’s target. Better to just keep him safe in a museum, right? ⚡ 🔨
