April is technically over now but I wanted to share my arrangement and lyrics of Dave Brubeck’s “Cassandra” for a school concert earlier this month! To write lyrics to this song,I drew inspiration from the Greek princess Cassandra, who, after promising herself to the Greek God Apollo but rescinding her consent, was both blessed with the gift of prophecy and cursed so that no one would believe her. I reframed her story from her perspective as she begins to question whether it is her fault that she was cursed, as a metaphor for how survivors of sexual assault deal with feelings of intense shame and stigma surrounding their assault, and how they may begin to gaslight or convince themselves that it was their fault. This arrangement was performed during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Paul Hall at Juilliard 🩵Thank you to my combo and @avaprestonmusic especially for bringing my lyrics to life 🫶 by @allisonlee.mp3

hope is a thing with feathers 🪽so honoured to have had a chance to record my original song for @wbgojazz’s jazz appreciation month at @yamahamusicusa! I wrote this song in response to @aidanmckeonmusic’s original song “Hope” - “Hope is a thing with feathers” is originally a poem written by Emily Dickinson, and @avaprestonmusic brought it to life!
