A little check-in on what’s been going on with our family. 🤍
Since finding out we’re having a boy, we’ve learned a little more about the journey that’s ahead of us. At our anatomy scan, we were told that our sweet boy has a small, isolated omphalocele, meaning some of his intestines have developed outside of his abdominal cavity, within the base of his umbilical cord. Because of this, he’ll need a surgical procedure after he’s born.
This means I’ll be delivering at UAB so he can be close to the incredible pediatric surgeons and NICU team who will care for him once he arrives. One of the hardest things for us to wrap our heads around is knowing that we most likely won’t be able to simply bring our baby home with us right away. Instead, he’ll spend some time in the NICU, surrounded by the people who are specially equipped to care for him and help him get strong.
More recently, we also learned that his chest cavity is measuring a little smaller than expected. We’re hopeful that this won’t cause any additional concerns when he’s born, but it does mean there will continue to be plenty of monitoring between now and his arrival.
Needless to say, it’s going to be quite the adventure getting this little boy into the world. While there have definitely been moments of fear and uncertainty, we feel incredibly blessed and grateful for the good news we’ve received along the way. We know there are still a lot of unknowns, and we’ll continue to take everything one appointment and one day at a time.
For now, all we can ask for is prayers — for our baby boy, for his doctors and surgeons, for a safe delivery, and for strength for our family as we navigate the road ahead.
We already love this little boy more than words could ever explain, and we cannot wait to meet him. by @allisonmbrown
