There is not much I love more than a historical gothic read, so I was thrilled to receive this book from @berkleypub . Told in dual timelines, this is a haunting tale of two women whose lives converge through a mysterious album of haunting photographs of the dead.

In 1865 London Minnie is sent to Culpepper House to work as a maid for the strange Culpepper twins, Edmund and Edith. Edmund speeds his time working in his laboratory and Edith spends hers using glass plates to create photographs. But then Minnie happens upon her subject matter- a young woman and swan who both appear to be dead. Worried that she could be the next victim, Minnie sets out to solve the secret of the mysterious goings on.

In present day London, artist Hadley is caught in a scandal while investigating a Victorian album of photographs of the dead. When word gets out about the photos she is contacted by Kit Culpepper offering her a huge sum of mine to sell him the photographs. Wondering why he wants them so basket, Hadley sets out to solve the mystery of the dead woman and the swan.

The timeline set in the past had a wonderful eerie quality and I was completely immersed in Minnie’s perilous situation. Unlike many dual timeline books, I found both stories equally compelling. Hadley’s timeline worked more as a mystery and I was filled with anticipation as she tried to find the answers about the photographs. Each character was well drawn and easy to connect with and I found myself rooting for both of them throughout.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Not really horror, but more a gothic mystery, it played nicely with the tropes of the genre. A home with mysterious goings on, family secrets, cemeteries and even visions, this combination of gothic suspense, intrigue and mild horror elements captivated me. I look forward to reading whatever Rushby writes next. #bookstagram #horrorbookstagram #gothicliterature #berkleypartner #bookworm by @allisonrushbyauthor

While this story alternates between London in 1865 and present day, I kept imagining that the 1865 house resembled the opulent Doria Pamphilj Gallery we visited in Rome (see pictures ➡️). This is a beautiful gothic historical fiction told in alternating timelines. Thank you @berkleypub @prhaudio @netgalley for the gifted eARCs!

In London, 1865, Minnie has been sent to Culpepper House to work as a maid. The Culpepper twins, Edith and Edmund seem eccentric. Minnie is shocked and horrified to learn that Edith is engaged in death photography of young women, who seemed to have met their unfortunate end all too soon. Could Minnie be next?
.
Meanwhile, in present day London, Hadley is struggling to live up to the legacy of her famous late mother. When she becomes mixed up in an art world scandal involving Victorian death photos, she is confronted by the wealthy Kit Culpepper. Kit is willing to give her whatever she wants to make the death photos disappear. But why? What dark family secrets is he trying to hide? And who is trying to sabotage her art show?

Art history, feminism, and power dynamics all intersect into a spellbinding tale. I both read and listened to this one, and I couldn’t put it down. The mystery was truly surprising to me, and I found both Minnie’s and Hadley’s stories engaging. I loved the ending! This story by @allisonrushbyauthor is haunting and atmospheric, with a modern day twist that brings everything into the present.

Perfect addition to your fall TBR! 🎧The audio narration by @saskiaaudio is gorgeous and enchanting. She captures the essence of both FMCs beautifully and I was hooked.

October means it’s spooky season and it’s one of my favourite months to read books that are spooky and/or give lots of thriller-ish vibes!

Today’s October spooky season shout out goes to Slashed Beauties. I love that Allison Rushby is an Australian author too! This one has been on my TBR and sounds amazing.

My girl, @ericathelez told me to get this book last year in Chicago, and I’m so glad I know to take her book recommendations to heart because OMG it sucked me in and I loved it.

Set half in the present day and half in late 1700s England, Slashed Beauties follow the story of three famed anatomy Venuses, used by medical students in school. But these Venuses are not only stunning, they may be deadly. In fact 250 years in the future legend has it they would come to life and murder the unsuspecting male students.

Half of this is the story of Eleanor, as she is abandoned in London by her “fiance” and tricked into turning to sex work. There she joins two other women in setting up a brothel. But the seemingly benevolent mistress is actually the worst and Eleanor and her friend Emily find themselves more and more mistreated with little hope for escape. The other half is told from the perspective of Alys, an antiques dealer whose life mission is to find the anatomy venuses modeled on the 18th century women and destroy them, since rumors of their ability to come to life may have some truth.

I loved both the creepy lore of the present and the often awful truth of the historical fiction. This was fast paced and kept me hooked the whole time. I’d have loved a bit more from the murder period of the Venuses, but I also think keeping that part brief made sense for the narrators we have. Overall I loved this and would very much recommend!

✨Spooky Saturday Shelfie✨

I have a review planned for tomorrow so we’re making it a shelfie Saturday featuring my “you goth this mug” (with iced coffee because I don’t do hot coffee)

I’m also sharing my @thedeadgirlssociety book club read, The Invited, which we’re discussing this weekend + my current read, All Her Beautiful Deaths + my gallery wall, which I’ve just about completed and need a vibey chair to complete + my black nails because I’m in between long nails + my miniature haunted shelf that I created this week!

Ok, we’re off to a full day of soccer! Happy weekend, friends!
