The national homicide rate in the US continued to decline over the first half of 2026, according to a new report from the DC-based nonprofit the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ).The Details: According to the study, the American homicide rate fell 18% compared to the first half of 2025 and 51% since the most recent peak in 2022. The report examined 13 different types of crime across 36 different cities, though only 30 of the cities provided homicide data. Eight cities saw rises in murder since last year. Norfolk led the way with a 64% increase, while San Francisco followed with a 55% spike. Dallas and Salt Lake City also had significant jumps, and Austin, Denver, Chicago, and Charlotte saw minor increases.Other Crimes: Nine of the 13 crimes examined saw decreases on average. Reported carjackings had the largest decrease at 47%, while drug offenses and domestic violence rose 12% and 8%, respectively. Shoplifting, which rose 5%, is the only measured crime that has so far remained above where it was in the first half of 2019.For Context: Earlier this year, The Crime Index reported similar findings: in the first four months of 2026, the murder rate has dropped by roughly 18%. In recent years, mainstream outlets have highlighted the reported correlation between warmer temperatures in summer months and an increase in crime.How The Media Covered It: Mainstream outlets across the spectrum began to cover the CCJ's report after it was published on Thursday, and coverage continued to come on Friday. Libertarian outlet Reason (Center) and Straight Arrow News (Center) highlighted in headlines that experts are unsure why the rate is declining. Reason author Jacob Sullum wrote in the opening, "That development is surely welcome news. Twenty-five states and Washington DC sued the Trump administration on Thursday over its new requirements to receive Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant funds. The Details: Under the latest conditions, states are required to certify their voter rolls through a federal database, move toward hand-marked paper ballots and abide by federal immigration law, according to several outlets. It also allowed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to cancel grants for any reason. The states argued the administration was withholding disaster relief to force through its agenda, which it estimated to be at least 20% of Homeland Security Grant Program awards – roughly $148 million.The States: Those involved are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Washington DC, as well as the governors of Kentucky and Pennsylvania. 'Jeopardizing Public Safety': Many outlets on the left emphasized the implications for state emergency response if funds are withheld. ABC News (Lean Left) said the tactic is one the Trump administration has repeatedly used to "browbeat mostly Democrat states into complying with its priorities," and also noted it's one that "courts have repeatedly found…to be unlawful and unconstitutional."'Protecting Elections': Outlets including Reuters (Center) and CBS News (Lean Left) included a quote from a FEMA spokesperson who said, "We fully expected these left-wing politicians to oppose common-sense measures designed to protect election security." Reuters wrote that Trump and his allies have made false claims about widespread voting fraud since 2020, but also mentioned that 6,600 unauthorized immigrants were recently found to have been accidentally registered to vote in New Jersey.As of Thursday afternoon, Washington Examiner was the only outlet on the right that AllSides found to cover the story. by @allsidesnow

This story was more widely covered by the left and center than the right, though coverage AllSides found from across the political spectrum emphasized the danger to public health and the importance of increasing vaccination rates.⁠⁠The Details: Johns Hopkins University tracked measles cases through state and county health departments along with other resources, putting its information ahead of reports from the CDC, according to Washington Post (Lean Left bias). Washington Post also wrote that this record high "underscores how the country has entered a new phase in its battle with measles," as outbreaks are spreading wider and sustaining longer in multiple states rather than being concentrated in a few small undervaccinated communities.⁠⁠Key Quotes: Epidemiologist Dr. Syra Madad told New York Post (Lean Right), "This is a major public health warning sign… Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, but elimination is not a permanent trophy. It has to be protected through consistently high vaccination coverage, fast outbreak detection and strong local public health response."⁠⁠For Context: NewsNation (Center) reported that the elimination status for the US is "under question" because measles transmission has persisted for more than one year. It also noted that Canada lost its elimination status in 2025 and that both the US and Mexico are scheduled to review their elimination status soon.⁠⁠Vaccination Rates: Washington Post noted that vaccination rates have been declining for years, noting that because 30% of recent measles cases have been reported in adults, the outbreaks suggest that "groups of people were unvaccinated across generations and not just recently amid the political spotlight on vaccine hesitancy." OpenAI's artificial intelligence model autonomously hacked into AI startup Hugging Face's cyber infrastructure last week, according to OpenAI. Outlets across the political spectrum emphasized both concerns with AI capabilities and highlighted praise for the tech.The Details: OpenAI, ChatGPT's parent company, opened an investigation after Hugging Face said it detected and contained an AI agent it said compromised its infrastructure. The investigation found the security breach was driven by a combination of its GPT-5.6 Sol models, including an unreleased model, that escaped its testing environment – called a sandbox – while testing cybersecurity capabilities. According to OpenAI, the model was trying to find information that it could use to cheat on an evaluation.Going 'Rogue': Several outlets emphasized a narrative that AI was getting out of hand and rejecting restrictions. BBC (Center bias) described the AI models as going "rogue" and quoted technology experts who said the hack demonstrates that "OpenAI are not capable of safely deploying their own technology." The Atlantic (Left) called the hack "a predictable and alarming result of how the entire AI industry is developing its models," including that AI's ultimate aim is to "arrive at the solution – it doesn't matter how." CNBC (Lean Left) quoted an advisory partner as an investment banking firm who said the incident is "really frightening" and "totally scares me," despite being a self-described AI optimist. Split findings have emerged on the Democrats' polling average lead going into the 2026 midterms, with Fox News (Right bias) framing its own data as a historic high for the party and CNN (Lean Left) framing polling from outlets on the left as worrisome.From the Left: In a TV segment on Monday, CNN's polling analyst Harry Enten reviewed polling from The Washington Post (Lean Left) and CNBC (Lean Left). Enten said, "Yes, they're ahead, but they're ahead – I have to shrink down on the screen – by only four points, which is significantly less than what we saw in 2018 and 2006, when Democrats took back the house. This is an 'uh-oh,' this is a warning sign." For Context, the WaPo poll found Democrats holding a three-point lead with registered voters, and a seven point lead with those "absolutely certain to vote."Several mainstream outlets from the left and center highlighted this segment in news coverage, and Megyn Kelly (Right) mentioned it on a Sky News Australia (Right) segment. Kelly described the four-point lead as "historically very low." The Washington Examiner (Lean Right) published coverage on similar findings from the RealClearPolitics (Center) average, though it didn't mention the CNN segment.From the Right: A Fox News poll published on Wednesday found Democrats hold a seven-point polling average advantage in house races, leading 53% to 46%. Fox said 53% is the highest figure either party has achieved in its polls since 1996. When focused on counties that in 2024 were decided by ten points or less, Fox found Democrats to lead 59% to 41%. President Donald Trump on Wednesday reportedly approved a 30-year civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia that could allow for uranium enrichment in the kingdom.⁠⁠The Deal: The deal, estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars, would give American companies a central role in the development of Saudi Arabia's nuclear infrastructure, shutting out other foreign competitors. One key stipulation of the agreement includes building a uranium-enrichment facility on Saudi soil, if a joint US-Saudi study determines it warranted.⁠⁠Political Complications In A Tinderbox: Reuters (Center bias) highlighted that the agreement does not include the "gold standard," excluding the kingdom from enriching uranium or an "additional protocol" of extra international oversight." These omissions, according to Reuters, is "likely to worry U.S. Middle East allies, including Israel, and raise questions of consistency, as one of the justifications for the U.S. war on Iran this year was its refusal to give up an enrichment program." US lawmakers may also be opposed according to the article.⁠⁠Trades Away Leverage: An opinion writer for ZeroHedge (Lean Right) called the agreement "the latest step in a rapidly deepening relationship," adding that Trump "designated the kingdom a major non-NATO ally." The author said there is "one provision [that] is difficult to support," referencing the part of the agreement allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich its own uranium. The writer asserted that "the better model is simple: export the product, not the technology," explaining that "building Saudi enrichment capability trades away too much leverage." ⁠⁠Regional Arms Race: The New York Times (Lean Left) focused on concerns from Israel over the agreement. The article highlighted that the Biden administration included as a condition Saudi Arabia having "open diplomatic relations with Israel," adding that "Trump is now forging a deal with Saudi Arabia that appears to sidestep Israel entirely." The Trump administration paused over $1 billion in Medicaid funding to Minnesota and California on Tuesday in an effort to "stop the fraud before it happens" and impose proper documentation.The Details: The pause includes $867.5 million to California and $199 million to Minnesota, though it's unclear whether they "are in addition to, or overlap with, earlier deferrals announced this year," as analyzed by Associated Press (Lean Left bias). The administration said the funding could be restored if states comply with federal documentation requirements, which both states are reportedly in the process of effectuating.How The Media Covered It: Associated Press highlighted critics such as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), who accused the Trump administration of targeting blue states; and The Hill (Center) reported on "a trend of freezing funding to blue states." Associated Press gave voice to Minnesota DHS official John Connolly, who called the action "part of [the administration's] war on Medicaid and its recipients." It furthered, "CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz didn't provide concrete examples of fraud in the two states in justifying the deferrals." The New Republic (Left) staunchly asserted that there is "no proof of fraud." The Hill gave voice to critics as well, but it also outlined the allegations against the states. The Hill and Breitbart (Right) clarified that the funding is not being cut but deferred until the documentation requirements are rectified. Breitbart did not give voice to critics.For Context: Breitbart highlighted an instance in April when the Justice Department (DOJ) uncovered $50 million in health care fraud in Anaheim, California. Associated Press contrastingly highlighted an instance that same month, when "the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services acknowledged to The Associated Press it made a significant error in figures it used to help justify a fraud probe in New York."The White House launched "The Task Force to Eliminate Fraud" in March. The US State Department released a new report on Monday allegedly linking Cuba to the Democrat Socialists of America (DSA) and several decades of protests and unrest in America.The Report: The 100-page report alleged connections between Havana and "powerful leftist nonprofits," saying "The Cubans devoted themselves to recruiting, cultivating and mobilizing a global coalition of activists, intellectuals, and political groups" around what the report called "a new and distinct kind of Marxism, forged around an overriding resentment and fundamental hatred of the United States and the broader West."Willing Vector Of Communist Influence: Outlets on the right highlighted the aspects of the report alleging the "deep connections" between the DSA and organizations connected to Cuban intelligence. Just The News (Lean Right) said the report warned that the DSA "serves as a willing vector of Cuban Communist influence." Fox News (Right) framed much of the article around the report arguing "that Cuba's campaign reached far beyond traditional espionage," explaining that "Havana cultivated American activists, recruited spies, supported revolutionary movements and built relationships with universities and advocacy groups as part of a long-term effort to undermine U.S. interests and spread communist ideology."Suspicious Emphasis On Race: Outlets on the left, like The Guardian (Left) and The Washington Post (Lean Left), tended to frame the report amid "talk of U.S. push for regime change." The Washington Post article said that "The threat posed by Cuba is described in far more dire terms than those employed by U.S. intelligence officials and State Department diplomats over several decades, reviving speculation that the Trump administration is establishing a pretext for overthrowing the communist government in Havana," adding that this has been "a longtime goal of Secretary of State Marco Rubio." The Guardian said the report "jar[s] with [the] reality of hunger and blackouts," and asserts without evidence, the report shows a "suspicious emphasis on race" by detailing successful intelligence infiltration in the US was due to a soft spot for "glamorous Latins." by @allsidesnow
