Such big feelings for this beautiful boy who turns ONE today!

As a puppy raiser family for Guide Dogs of America, we have the privilege of loving, guiding, training, and preparing him for his journey to “college” at around 15–18 months old. Some are careful evaluated and considered for breeding exclusively for GDA’s mission & supervision (can you imagine Murphy babies 👶 🐾💜?)
Now do you want to consider becoming a puppy raiser? 😁 lol

Over the past year, we’ve raised funds, spread awareness, advocated in our community, attended training sessions, volunteered, and shared Murphy’s journey alongside @guidedogsofamerica mission. We constantly remind ourselves that while he is one of the most precious gifts we’ve ever received, he was never truly ours to keep. He is meant to give so much more to the world, fulfilling a purpose greater than ourselves.

When people ask us, “How can you give him up?” We remind ourselves that we’re not giving him up; we’re raising him to fulfill his true calling. This has been one of the hardest yet most fulfilling experiences of our lives.

One day, Murphy may become someone’s guide, helper, healer, loyal companion or a joy maker in the community. What an honor it is to love him during this pivotal chapter of his journey & you all have been apart of it. You are loved by our community, family, friends, counselors, neighbors, teachers, GDA Team and my entire volleyball & NCL community. So many people cheering you on …. ❤️🥹

October is Cancer Awareness Month, and this past week my volleyball team and I @viewpointschool hosted an event called “Spike Out Cancer!” We had a bake sale, and in addition, we raised money for the American Cancer Society to help save lives, fund cancer research, and support patients. This is the third year I have been involved in supporting this cause, but this year was different, I had Murphy (my puppy in training from @guidedogsofamerica @gdapuppies) by my side. It’s amazing the pawsitivity and joy he brings! He is only 5 months old and he is already making a difference and so can you 💖

After months of planning, researching, writing, and raising Murphy, I’m so excited to officially launch my website! This project has become so much more than a website. It’s a place where I share my journey as a guide dog puppy raiser, training tips from my own experiences, information about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), community outreach and the impact we have made, and my growing passion for disability advocacy and the law. Whether you are interested in learning about guide dogs and their impact, considering becoming a puppy raiser, or simply want to follow Murphy’s journey, I hope this site helps inspires and creates more understanding about the incredible work these dogs do. Thank you to everyone who has supported Murphy and me along the way. This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to continue sharing our journey! I have attached the link below 🐾💜

Never met a dog who loves bath time & gets so excited when we say, “brush teeth!”

Service/ Guide dogs are held to a high standard of hygiene because they often accompany their handlers into public places such as restaurants, schools, hospitals, stores, airports, and on public transportation.

Our job as puppy raisers is to ensure he is comfortable being handled. Beyond physical health, grooming is an important part of training. Pups in training are taught from an early age to remain calm and cooperative while their paws, ears, mouth, and body are handled. This makes routine grooming, veterinary care, and emergency examinations less stressful.

Not all dogs are selected for guide/service dog work, and one of the reasons Labrador Retrievers, like Murphy, excel in these roles is their strong food motivation. They are FOODIES, just like me 😉🍱 🍔!!!

A Labrador’s enthusiasm for food isn’t just about treats, it’s a powerful training tool. Using positive, reward based methods, trainers and puppy raisers, like me reinforce desired behaviors, build focus, strengthen communication, and help puppies gain confidence in new environments. Because Labs, like Murphy, are highly motivated by rewards, they often learn quickly and remain eager to engage in training.

That being said, obesity can quickly set in, so we are managing appropriately measured meals and using only specific treats for training (which for Murphy, is his kibble) is essential for both his health and maintaining his training motivation. And guess what, sometimes when he is just a tiny bit hangry, (right before his regular feeding time) that is typically when he is the most compliant. #hangrypuppy #puppytraining #labpuppy #sadeyandmurphysjourney #postivereinforcementdogtraining taken in Foodie by @allthepawsabilities
