Ophiocordyceps australis 🐜

One of the more common entomopathogenic finds we came across in the Peruvian Amazon. 🇵🇪

Check out the white eyes 😳 👀creepy.

There’s some awesome information and study’s surrounding these #fungi a quick Google search will blow your mind.

No rain, no Fungi so…. 🫠 An early 4am start had one goal in mind: photographing dragonflies and damselflies around the pond at sunrise.

Unfortunately, they didn’t make an appearance, so I put my UV torch to good use instead.

These images show a borage flower and a white sweet pea flower photographed under ultraviolet light, alongside their appearance in normal daylight.

Many flowers have UV patterns, often called nectar guides. These hidden markings are said to help guide insects towards nectar and pollen. While both flowers look beautiful in daylight, UV photography reveals an entirely different layer of information that highlights how insects experience them.

It’s a great reminder that even when the original subject doesn’t cooperate, nature always has something fascinating to reveal.

Pilobolus sp. 💩 Dung cannons

Growing on herbivore dung, these tiny fruiting bodies are surprisingly elegant. Their sculptural forms are only a few millimetres tall, yet under magnification they resemble miniature works of modern art. #allthingsfungi

🌈I often come across these slime moulds at stages I’d consider less beautiful than others in their short life cycle. On this occasion, I’m glad I didn’t write this rather drab little brown one off.

At this brief moment, this species is displaying an iridescence, a trait I often chase in other species that are far better known for it.

There’s more than meets the eye.

Truffles! 👃🌚

I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with some experienced truffle snufflers who don’t use dogs.

After soaking up as much information as I could, I headed out to put it into practice myself.

I’m reluctant to share the techniques, that’s their knowledge to pass on, but I will show you one of the indicators: ‘the truffle fly’ 🪰 🕵️‍♂️

The truffle photos here were taken by me for Rikki. By carefully digging them out by hand, we were able to see the roots hugging the outside of the truffle, a very cool sight to document.

The truffles we found at this spot were mostly too small, except for one, so we paused the hunt and left the rest to mature. But now I know exactly where they are without anyone leading this badger to water. 🙂🤫🦡 #allthingsfungi

Swipe for a POV video and you can join me on a hunt for goblin treasure. 🤓

The semi aquatic species mentioned was Cudoniella tenuispora - tiny white pins found on damp wood in or around fresh water at this time of year.

The little ascomycete (grey circle) surrounding the infected fly in the first picture is likely a Mollisia sp.

I’m unsure as to what the zombie is 🪰 both host and fungus. 🤷‍♂️

Not bad for a dry spell after a heat wave 😎

I used my camera cleaner air blower 💨 to blow the spores out here revealing the net like structure that Cribraria have. Each species is unique and it’s important to help with Identifying these to species level.

The first image was captured using my OM1 / OM 90mm macro lens and a x2 teleconverter. A focus bracketed image or around 50 frames.

I only used the front half of the focus stack, with a bit of editing you get an idea of what the net might look like without the back half of net doubling up. #myxomycetes #macronature

For Slime Mould Sunday my excited self is still getting joy from this find a week later. The iridescent shimmer is incredible 🪄

Each sporangium is around 0.5mm, this image is a focus bracket comprised of over 260 frames captured using a x10 microscope objective. 📸 lights @smallrig.global
