October 7th is National Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day.
As many of you know every year I share about the disease that took my life from me at 16 years old.
I was just a normal daughter, sister and friend but one day that all changed. I went from being a competitive dancer, dancing 6 days a week to bed ridden with nothing but memories. I went from dreaming of owning Manestream to spending countless nights afraid I’ll never make it out of this.
One sinus surgery damaged my Trigeminal Nerve at 16 and I’ve spent years trying to fix a mistake a doctor made. My family has watched me fight harder and harder every year to have even a glimpse of a normal life that I have always dreamed of. I spent years traveling to doctors and having surgeries or procedures and trying new medications so that I could have even just a few minutes of a pain free life. Now at the age of 23 I’ve had 3 brain surgeries and plenty of procedures to last a lifetime. Unfortunately my battle with Trigeminal is not over but I do hope I can be a voice in spreading awareness.
Now Id like to take some time to explain a little bit about trigeminal neuralgia and how it impacts my life and many others.
•Trigeminal Neuralgia is nicknamed the suicide disease.
•It is caused by facial trauma, a blood vessel pressing on the nerve root and or multiple sclerosis.
• There is no cure for this disease but it is possible to live life with guidance and pain management.
• Almost anything can trigger a flare up in which it can last days.
• Severe facial like pain that feels like aching, burning, or electrical shocks.
• There are very few medications and surgeries that cure this disease they will most likely cause paralysis and alter your way of life.
• There is type 1 and type 2 TN
• Over 60% of people take their life living with this disease which is why it is important to spread awareness and help donate to research to find a cure.
Now, id like to take the next few weeks to raise money for the national pain association in hopes we can be one step closer to finding a cure.
