11/12 - TEEN EDITION QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Everyone keeps telling you to "love yourself." But what happens when you don't? WHAT IF I REALLY DON'T LIKE MYSELF? Maybe your worth changes depending on the day. Someone texts you back - you feel wanted. They leave you on read - you don't. You make the team - you matter. You get cut - you don't. Someone wants to date you - you feel attractive. They choose someone else - and suddenly you're examining everything that's wrong with you. Your body. Your grades. Your friends. Your clothes. Your athletic ability. Your popularity. Your social media. Your future. And the world's answer is usually, "Just love yourself." But what if you can't? Christianity offers something far sturdier than spending your life trying to convince yourself that you're impressive. It says your value didn't originate with you. You were created intentionally by God. You bear His image. You are known by Him. Your failures are real - but they don't get to define the entirety of who you are. And in Christ, your identity isn't something you have to manufacture every morning depending upon how you feel about yourself. Maybe the answer isn't becoming obsessed with yourself in a more positive direction. Maybe it's finally having somewhere outside yourself to stand. Instead of endlessly asking, "Am I enough?" Christianity invites another question: "Who is God - and who am I because I belong to Him?" If you're exhausted from constantly measuring whether you're enough, let's talk. At All Things New, counseling can help you understand your story, confront what isn't true, and build an identity sturdy enough to survive rejection, failure, comparison - and being a teenager. 10/12 - TEEN EDITION QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. "Okay, but WHY? Why does God care what I do with my own body?" WHY DOES CHRISTIANITY CARE SO MUCH ABOUT SEX? That's a better question than Christians sometimes give teenagers credit for asking. You're surrounded by messages about sexuality: explore it, express it, follow your feelings, do what feels right as long as everyone agrees. Then sometimes Christianity enters the conversation with one word: DON'T. Don't have sex. Don't look at porn. Don't sext. Don't lust. Don't masturbate. Eventually a thoughtful teenager might reasonably ask: But WHY? Christianity doesn't put boundaries around sexuality because sex is dirty. It does so because the Christian understanding of the body and sexuality makes sex profoundly meaningful. Your body isn't meaningless. Sexual desire isn't meaningless. What you do with another person's body isn't meaningless. And what you repeatedly train your own desires toward isn't meaningless either. That's why Christians should be able to have real conversations about pornography, masturbation, sexual desire, attraction, sexting, boundaries, temptation, heartbreak, and self-control without acting horrified that teenagers have sexual questions. You don't merely need a list of things you're forbidden to do. You deserve to understand what God says sexuality is actually FOR. Have a sexual question you've been too embarrassed to ask at church - or too afraid an adult will freak out about? At All Things New, we can talk about sexuality without shame, without pretending, and without abandoning biblical truth. The uncomfortable questions are welcome here. 09/12 - TEEN EDITION QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Maybe you know all the Christian answers. You're just not sure you actually believe them. WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE I ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS? Maybe Christianity has always been part of your life: church, youth group, Christian parents, Bible stories, worship music. You know what you're supposed to say. But somewhere along the way questions started showing up: How do I actually know God exists? Why should I trust the Bible? What if Christianity is only what I believe because of where I grew up? Why does God allow terrible things to happen? What if I pray and hear absolutely nothing? And perhaps the scariest one: What if I don't actually believe this? Christian adults sometimes become frightened by those questions because we think doubt means we're losing you. But questions can also mean you're finally examining whether the faith you've inherited is actually true. God doesn't need us to protect Him from your questions. Christianity makes truth claims. Those claims can be investigated, challenged, studied, and wrestled with. Perhaps your biggest need isn't another adult telling you what you're supposed to believe. Maybe you need a safe place to actually wrestle. Eventually Christianity has to become more than, "This is what my family believes." The question becomes, "Who is Jesus - and what do I actually believe about Him?" If you've been carrying questions you're afraid a Christian isn't supposed to ask, bring them. At All Things New, you don't have to pretend certainty to begin the conversation. Let's wrestle with the questions and pursue what is actually true. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. 08/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Maybe you've asked this question - and then immediately felt guilty for asking it: "God, why haven't You fixed this?" WHY HASN'T GOD HEALED MY MENTAL-HEALTH STRUGGLE? I've prayed. I've believed. I've read Scripture. I've gone to counseling. I've begged You. Why am I still struggling? I don't have a tidy answer. And I'm suspicious of Christians who pretend they do. Sometimes God delivers dramatically. Sometimes He works through ordinary means. Sometimes circumstances change. Sometimes suffering persists. And sometimes, like Paul, we ask repeatedly for the thorn to be removed - and God's answer isn't removal. Christianity never promises that faithfulness produces a pain-free life. It promises something much greater: God is present and purposeful even in suffering. Eventually the question may begin to change from, "How do I get God to make this stop?" to "God, who are You - and who are You forming me to become - even here?" That isn't resignation. We still seek help. We investigate physical contributors. We change destructive circumstances where we can. We pursue wise counsel. We repent where repentance is needed. We grieve what needs grieving. We treat what can appropriately be treated. But eventually every Christian encounters something they cannot control away. There we discover whether Jesus is merely the means through which we hope to obtain a better life - or whether Jesus Himself is our life. Christian counseling asks something bigger than, "How do we make this feeling go away?" It also asks, "Where is Christ in the middle of your story - and what would it mean to faithfully follow Him from right here?" If you've tried everything you know to do and you're still hurting, perhaps you don't need another easy answer. You may need a place to ask the harder question with someone willing to stay in it with you. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. Growing from hurt, living in hope. 07/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Does saying "I do" mean you can never say "no"? CAN A CHRISTIAN SPOUSE SAY NO TO SEX? Yes, a Christian spouse can say no to sex. Marriage creates profound sexual commitments of faithfulness, generosity, mutuality, and care. It does not turn another person's body into property. First Corinthians 7 is sometimes wielded as though Paul handed one spouse unlimited sexual access to the other. Read the passage carefully: its language is strikingly mutual. Husband and wife are both addressed. Christian marital sexuality should never simply become, "You owe me." It should increasingly become, "How can I love you?" That matters when there has been betrayal, pornography, childbirth, physical pain, illness, fear, sexual trauma, relational disconnection, or coercion. A healthy Christian marriage shouldn't require one spouse to weaponize Scripture to pressure the other into sexual compliance. But chronically withholding intimacy to punish, manipulate, or control a spouse deserves examination too. Neither entitlement nor weaponized withholding reflects biblical marital love. Maybe the most useful question isn't, "Do I have the right to say no?" It's, "What is happening between us that has made sexual intimacy feel unsafe, unwanted, obligatory, or disconnected from love?" Now we have something worth counseling. If intimacy has become a battleground, obligation, avoidance, or source of pain, there may be much more happening beneath the surface. That's worth bringing into wise, biblically grounded counsel. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. Growing from hurt, living in hope. 06/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Here's something Christians desperately need permission to say out loud: "I love Jesus - and sometimes I don't want to be alive." CAN A CHRISTIAN BE SUICIDAL? Can those two realities exist in the same suffering human being? Yes. Scripture contains people experiencing extraordinary anguish. Elijah asked God to take his life. Job wished he'd never been born. Jeremiah cursed the day of his birth. Their words weren't removed from Scripture because they sounded insufficiently faithful. So when someone tells us, "I don't want to be here anymore," our first response shouldn't be a theological lecture. Listen. Take it seriously. Help them become safe. Bring appropriate people into the situation. Then, when immediate safety has been addressed, become deeply curious about the suffering underneath those words. Sometimes "I want to die" contains another desperate sentence: "I cannot imagine continuing to live like THIS." Those aren't necessarily identical statements. Discovering the difference can open an important conversation about what feels unbearable, what needs to change, and where hope has disappeared. Christian hope doesn't require pretending darkness isn't dark. It declares that darkness doesn't get the final word. If you are in immediate danger or believe you may act on suicidal thoughts, seek emergency assistance or call/text 988 in the United States. There is no spiritual prize for suffering alone. Deep suffering deserves more than a cliché. It deserves safety, wisdom, compassionate presence, and hope. If you're hurting, let someone into the darkness with you. 05/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. "But I never actually cheated." Is physical contact really where Jesus drew the line for sexual faithfulness? IS PORNOGRAPHY REALLY ADULTERY? Jesus moved the conversation about sexual faithfulness beyond merely what our bodies have physically done. He went after the heart. Pornography intentionally invites us to sexually consume images of people who aren't our spouse. Then we're surprised when pornography enters the marriage with us - when desire changes, secrecy grows, spouses experience betrayal, expectations become distorted, and real intimacy has to compete with fantasy. Perhaps the Christian question isn't merely, "Did I technically commit adultery?" It's, "What kind of sexuality am I cultivating?" Pornography trains sexuality toward consumption. Christian marriage calls sexuality toward covenant. Pornography says, "Your body exists for my gratification." Christian love asks, "How can I love rather than consume another person?" And that's why shame alone rarely solves pornography. The goal isn't merely getting someone to stop looking at a screen. It's recovering a vision of sexuality that is bigger, holier, more relational, and more beautiful than consumption. That's not merely a browser-history problem. That's a discipleship issue. Freedom from pornography is about more than stopping a behavior. If secrecy, shame, betrayal, or compulsive sexual patterns have entered your story, godly counsel can help bring them into the light and pursue restoration. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. 04/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Here's a question Christians sometimes answer way too quickly. CAN CHRISTIANS TAKE PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATION? Yes, Christians can take psychiatric medication. But Christians should also be allowed to ask thoughtful questions about it. Taking medication doesn't automatically demonstrate weak faith. Declining it doesn't automatically demonstrate stronger faith. Neither deserves to become a spiritual badge. Medication can be beneficial for some people. It can also cause side effects, and some psychiatric medications can produce significant discontinuation or withdrawal symptoms when reduced too rapidly. Benzodiazepines, in particular, carry established risks of physical dependence and withdrawal. So resist two simplistic answers: "If you trusted God enough, you wouldn't need medication" and "It's just medicine. Don't ask questions." Ask what the medication is intended to accomplish. Ask about benefits and risks. Ask about emotional and sexual side effects. Ask about dependence and withdrawal. Ask how long your prescriber anticipates using it and what safely discontinuing it might eventually involve. Never abruptly stop psychiatric medication without appropriate medical guidance. And ask another question: What can medication never do? It cannot forgive sin, reconcile a marriage, tell you who you are, give suffering meaning, teach forgiveness, produce repentance, replace community, or reconcile you to God. Medication may have an appropriate place in someone's care. It simply makes a terrible savior. Good counsel makes room for careful questions about the body, the mind, medication, suffering, and God. You don't have to check your Christian worldview at the door to think carefully about treatment. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. Growing from hurt, living in hope. 03/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. "Do not be anxious." Okay...but what if I AM? IS ANXIETY A SIN? Jesus tells us not to be anxious. So does experiencing anxiety mean you're disobeying Jesus? Not so fast. There is an important difference between an involuntary alarm response and what we choose to believe, rehearse, pursue, or obey once fear arrives. A racing heart isn't a moral failure. A panic attack isn't evidence that you don't love Jesus. An intrusive fearful thought isn't automatically unbelief. But Christianity also refuses to tell us that anxiety has nothing to say about our spiritual lives. Fear can expose enormous questions: Who is actually in control? What am I terrified of losing? What am I trying desperately to control? What am I believing will make me safe? Do I believe God will remain good even if the thing I fear actually happens? That's why "just stop worrying" is terrible counsel. Jesus doesn't merely tell anxious people to knock it off. He redirects their attention: look at the birds, look at the lilies, look at your Father. "Your heavenly Father knows that you need them" (Matthew 6:32). Christian counseling shouldn't shame anxiety. But neither should its only goal be teaching us how to accommodate it. We can listen to what fear is saying, challenge what isn't true, care for the body God gave us, practice wisdom, and slowly learn that peace isn't ultimately found in controlling everything. It's found in knowing the One who does. You don't need someone to shame your fear or simply teach you to live around it. If anxiety is running the show, let's get curious about what it is saying - and bring truth to it. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. Growing from hurt, living in hope. 02/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. Okay, Christians. We're going there. IS IT OKAY FOR CHRISTIANS TO MASTURBATE? Scripture never directly says, "Thou shalt not masturbate." So does that settle it? Not really. Christian sexual ethics are bigger than locating the technical line between allowed and forbidden. Christianity asks: What is sexuality for? What is happening in my imagination? Is pornography involved? Am I deliberately cultivating sexual fantasies about someone who isn't my spouse? Is this becoming compulsive? Am I learning self-control - or training myself to immediately satisfy sexual desire whenever it arises? And perhaps most importantly: What is this practice forming me to become? Jesus takes our interior sexual lives seriously. He doesn't merely care what our bodies physically do. He cares about what we're cultivating within our hearts. That doesn't make sexual desire dirty. It doesn't mean every involuntary sexual thought is lust. And shame is a terrible substitute for holiness. But "the Bible doesn't specifically forbid it" isn't the end of Christian discernment. Maybe the better question isn't simply, "Can I do this?" Maybe it's, "Does this train my sexuality toward God's purposes - or increasingly toward myself?" Godly counsel doesn't avoid uncomfortable sexual questions. It helps us ask better ones. If this is a subject you've never felt safe discussing without shame or embarrassment, it is worth a thoughtful conversation. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. Growing from hurt, living in hope. 01/12 QUESTIONS CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ASK The questions we think about, Google privately, whisper to trusted friends, and sometimes feel too embarrassed to ask at church. "But I love Jesus. So why do I feel like I don't even want to get out of bed?" WHY DO CHRISTIANS STRUGGLE WITH DEPRESSION? Because Christians are still human. We live in bodies that become exhausted and sick. We experience grief, hormonal changes, loneliness, disappointment, relational devastation, chronic stress, and circumstances that can overwhelm us. Scripture never pretends faithful people are immune to profound emotional suffering. David asked why his soul was downcast. Elijah reached a point where he wanted to die. Job cursed the day he was born. Jeremiah knew deep sorrow. Their anguish wasn't edited out of Scripture. But neither was God. That's why Christian counsel shouldn't simply tell a suffering person, "You need more faith." But neither should we automatically reduce the whole human experience to a diagnosis or brain chemistry. Wise counsel becomes curious about the whole person - body, sleep, hormones, relationships, habits, circumstances, grief, beliefs, sin, suffering, community, and spiritual life. Depression often asks, "What is wrong with me?" Godly counsel can help us ask, "What is happening in me, around me, and between me and God - and what needs attention?" Depression can make God feel absent. Feeling His absence and being abandoned by Him are not the same thing. Sometimes the beginning of healing isn't pretending you're okay. It's learning to bring the darkness honestly into the presence of God. You don't have to choose between taking your suffering seriously and taking your faith seriously. If you're tired of carrying both in separate rooms, let's bring them into the same conversation. ALL THINGS NEW THERAPY SERVICES, INC. Growing from hurt, living in hope.
