«it was the 1980s. bombings and paramilitary groups - like the CCC and the Brabant Killers - were trying to shake up the system. that dark and tense era created a healthy soil for hard escapism. on top of that, there were no government-imposed closing hours, meaning bars, cafés, and clubs could stay open as long as they wanted. that endless party energy became an essential part of the Belgian state of mind»

➷ ⋆· this story comes from a conversation with Geert Sermon - better known as Doctor Vinyl - the man prescribing records to heal the soul since 1997. co-author of the documentary and compilation The Sound of Belgium, he began DJing in the late 80s and told us how, back then, the UK dance scene was heavily shaped by Belgian sounds ( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻)

«while the mid-90s generation tends to associate those influences mainly with UK rave, breakbeat, and jungle - disconnecting them from their roots - the real heads know the truth»( ˘ ᵕ ˘♡) (੭ˊᵕˋ)

(੭ˊᵕˋ) tag your digging buddy and fly to Brussels for a masterclass on the sound of Belgium♡

Had the pleasure of visiting Rook Records last June for The Dig, an event they organised to celebrate the community of incredible record stores in East London. It was my first time participating in a record store crawl. I did not have the time to visit all the stores involved, but it’s such an amazing idea. A lot of fun and ppl to talk music with. It was also lovely to share it with my friend @howtosaychiaraa who took amazing pictures on her Lumix. The store is co-owned by long-time friends and DJ/collectors Louis and Julian. They sell second-hand records, specialising in Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop and World music, and are strong on imported stock and rarities. Deffo a place to re-dig x

Music reflects and feeds emotions. It inspires, comforts, offends and entertains. Music awakens memory and punctuates our present. The Music is Black: A British Story traces the roots and routes of music that has descended from African musical practices and gone on to influence and transform British identity over the past 125 years. It explores where Black music in Britain since 1900 has come from - tracking an ever-evolving sound shaped by British colonialism, transatlantic enslavement and voluntary migration. From lovers rock and Brit funk, to 2 Tone, jungle and grime, this exhibition reveals the creation of British-born Black music genres and how they have impacted lives across the country and beyond - how we speak, dress and view the world. The Music is Black is a story of Black struggle, resilience, creativity and joy. It is a story of us all.

@multimultifestival is a summer daytime festival curated by @secretsundaze (who, after decades of DJing and throwing parties, probably knows a thing or two lol). It happens during summer in Hackney Wick and we were there for this year’s edition. It has 11 dance floors spread across 7 venues, but we loved that the shows still feel very intimate and the DJs dance on the same level as the crowd. This is deffo a festival to dig💘
