October is mental health awareness month, and I spent two days of it with the people who carry this work in Tanzania.

At the 3rd Tanzania Mental Health Scientific Conference, held at MUHAS Upanga Campus on 15 and 16 October, I spoke, I helped the organizing team coordinate the flow of sessions, and I met the psychiatrists who once taught me.

I shared the work we do with AfyaKweli, a fact-checking tool for health misinformation and disinformation. It detects false claims and gives people information in plain language they can understand, backed by evidence. My message was simple. People should have access to the right health information, and we doctors must be at the forefront so that people hear it from us first and not from whoever is loudest online.

Then I looked around the room. Dr. Zainab, Dr. Amina, Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Mahazi Moto taught me when they were residents. Now they are psychiatrists. I also met Dr. Sadiki, Dr. Mwisomba and Dr. Mwombeki, psychiatrists who taught me back then. Dr. Mwombeki is now Acting Director of the Tanzania Mental Health Institute, the place we knew as Mirembe. Around them were many other psychiatrists and mental health professionals, including psychologists, all in one room.

A lot has changed since those days, but one thing has not. Watu ni wale wale. I saw it again when Prof. Aza Nyundo spoke about the doctor who taught him when he was a student, and she was sitting in the room. Same warmth, same open door, same willingness to guide those who come after them. Being around them felt like coming home. I have come to believe that kindness cannot be separated from this profession.

Dr. Mwisomba is the best example. He was just elected President of the Tanzania Psychiatric Association. In 2023 he came to my university, SFUCHAS in Ifakara, as a visiting lecturer. He taught us, then invited anyone who wanted to keep learning to dinner. He has guided me and my fellow students ever since, and that dinner became a group of aspiring psychiatrists at St. Francis. Many of us now see psychiatry as our career path. I hope more will join.

I can't wait to meet my fellow youth at the Youth Forum on 12th November, part of the 6th Tanzania Digital Health and Innovation Forum at the UDSM New Library.

Youth are the architects of Agenda 2050 and Agenda 2063. We are on the ground and we carry the fresh ideas, so these are the rooms we belong in.

The forum is hosted by MUHAS, ECSA Health Community and LM International, with government partners including the Ministry of Health, PMO-RALG, the Ministry of ICT and eGA. Other partners include the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania, Capgemini, Mälardalen University, D-tree, the Tanzania Health Informatics Association and many more.

You don't need a tech or health background to come. See what is already working, pick up new ideas, and find a team you could join.

If you haven't registered yet, now is the time. See you at the UDSM New Library on 12th and 13th November.

Being heard is not enough. People with lived experience have to shape the decisions that affect them.
That is the theme of World Mental Health Day 2026: "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change."

Swipe to see what WHO's data shows and what each of us can do.

If someone opens up to you this week, listen first. If it is beyond you, help them find care.

Share this with a health worker or a young person who needs to see it.

Are you a young person attending the @tanzaniahealthsummit tomorrow, (October 5)?
Do not go only to participate. Go to be active and engaged.

Tips from Farhan Yusuf @fayusuf ahead of AHTS Kigali, true for every summit:
Go through the agenda and pick your sessions.
Do the same for the people you want to meet.
Focus on conversations, not pictures for social media. Learn and leave an impression with your thoughts.

Tomorrow he will also facilitate the YOCAB Youth Capacity Building workshop with the facilitation team. YOCAB fellows, come prepared, ask questions and make good use of their time.

By 2050 and 2063, the young people of today will be leading healthcare. That starts with how we show up now. by @allypandit

Happy #WorldTourismDay🌍🇹🇿

People save all year and cross continents for a short trip to Tanzania.

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro,Zanzibar,Mikumi etc

World-class, right at our doorstep… and most of us have never seen them. We take home for granted because it's home.

Maybe it's time we saw it too.

EFG is launching HER VOICE.

We’re bringing adolescent girls in Dar es Salaam and Pwani together with mentors, entrepreneurs and advocates who’ve been where they’re going. Real conversations on GBV prevention, SRHR, rights and leadership — not lectures.

The work continues after the sessions through Girls’ Clubs, Peer Champions and regular follow-up visits.

Empower. Transform. Sustain.

Partners and donors, this is the moment to stand with these girls. Walk with us.

Over the past three days, our program lead, Dr. Ally Omary, joined a training that prepared research assistants for a national study on peer sexual violence among adolescents and youth in Tanzania. Fieldwork begins this month.

Sexual violence among young people is a subject many communities still find hard to confront, but silence has never made it disappear.

The study will run across five regions, Dodoma, Morogoro, and Dar es Salaam on the Mainland, and Unguja and Pemba in Zanzibar.

The training covered REDCap for data collection, alongside the ethics and safeguarding needed when engaging young people on a subject this sensitive, from obtaining proper consent to maintaining confidentiality throughout.

It also covered community entry, the chain of command to follow when concerns arise, and how to engage social welfare officers, local leaders, and government structures. Even the skip logic built into the survey app is there to protect participants and keep every interaction handled with care.

The research brings together @genactafrica ,@ylabsglobal and @muhimbiliuniversity with member organizations across the network contributing to the process

We are proud to be part of this collective effort, helping build evidence on an issue that young people live through but that our communities are still reluctant to name. Change starts with evidence that reflects their realities. When the findings are out, they can move us beyond assumption toward stronger prevention, better response systems, and solutions shaped by the people this research is meant to serve.

We can't wait to see what this study reveals and the action it inspires.
Because what we refuse to see clearly, we cannot fix. And what we refuse to talk about will not change on its own
