What started as a my Block Party fundraiser became something so much bigger than volleyball

This season, every block and ace helped raise awareness and support for mental health through BroncoBOLD’s High School Ambassador Program, a program dedicated to helping students feel seen, supported, and empowered to ask for help.

Mental health advocacy is deeply personal to me. Growing up, navigating depression, COVID, and a career-ending injury, I struggled heavily with my identity and mental health. Volleyball had always been my outlet, my purpose, and the foundation of who I thought I was. When that was taken away, I felt completely lost.

There were moments where I truly believed things would never get better. But through support, treatment, education, and learning that my worth existed beyond a sport, I slowly rebuilt myself piece by piece.

That journey is why this Block Party fundraiser meant so much to me. It wasn’t just about volleyball or money raised, it was about using my platform to create conversations that could help someone else feel less alone.

Programs like BroncoBOLD remind students and athletes that asking for help is strength, not weakness. And if sharing my story or turning this season into something bigger than myself helps even one person, then every part of the journey has been worth it.

September is Suicide Prevention Month 💚

Depression and suicide ideation is always a hard topic to talk about and sharing can feel incredibly vulnerable. But I’ve learned that staying silent doesn’t make the struggle disappear and sometimes sharing your story can remind someone else that they aren’t alone.

I’ve struggled with depression and suicidal ideation for as long as I can remember, and there have been moments when asking for help felt like the hardest thing I could do. I thought I needed to handle it on my own. I thought asking for help meant I wasn’t strong enough. I always looked around me and saw such strong women who seemed to have everything figured out on the outside, making me feel alone in my struggles - and I’m here to say ITS OKAY to struggle, not everyone has their shit together.

As an athlete, I also had to learn something that changed the way I saw myself: I am more than my sport.

Your worth is not determined by how well you perform, how many games you win, how much you contribute to your team, or whether you are even able to play. You are a person before you are an athlete, and there is so much more to you than what you can do on a court, field, or the sand.

It took me a while to understand that asking for help isn’t a weakness. It’s a turning point.
I know that so many people feel alone every day and don’t know where to turn or how to access the resources they need. I want to continue to help break the stigma surrounding mental health and start more conversations between athletes, teens, kids, adults and anyone who is willing to talk about it.

You don’t have to wait until things become unbearable. You don’t have to have the right words. And you don’t have to go through it alone.

There is no shame in struggling. There is no weakness in asking for help. And your hardest moment does not define the rest of your story.

Asking for help can be the turning point that starts the rest of your life - it did for me
