We are thrilled to introduce the newest addition to the Almanac Project roster: Body as an Archive by Junru Wang.

A tour-de-force solo circus-theatre show about Junru’s incredible life story, which took her from a Chinese military circus school to Cirque du Soliel at the age of 9, to rediscovering herself as an artist as an adult in LA.

We’re so excited to support this incredible work’s continued development, and help it reach more audiences around the world. You can catch it in Philadelphia as part of Cannonball in September —Tickets are on sale now at the link in bio by @almanac_us

There would be no Almanac without Dito.

It’s difficult to process the reality that he is actually gone. Throughout the years, he’s been a teacher, mentor, friend, and cheerleader for so many Almanac artists — uplifting our work at every turn and inviting us to perform alongside Martha at countless Pig Iron benefits. Whenever Dito was in the room, that was the room we wanted to be in. And we feel him around us still, in the creative tools he taught us, in mannerisms we embody, inside each of us.

For the inaugural class of the Pig Iron school, where Almanac’s co-founders Nick and Ben met, Dito taught two classes: Open Canvas and Cabaret. Open Canvas taught us to see the poetry in the mundane, how our bodies on stage tell stories together, and how to make space for quiet beauty, and how to support each other. And its since become a central tool used in making every Almanac show. In Cabaret, Dito brought one central question: what are you doing to the audience? “How are you ‘verb-ing’ them?” This simple question and reframing of performance was and is groundbreaking. And these lessons are not just for performance, but for life — how can we remind each other to see the beauty in what is already around us? What does it look like to support each other better? And what, after all, are we doing here?

Dito lived a life that embodied these questions, and the reminder, amid all the grief, to keep them central, is just a small part of what we’re carrying forward in Dito’s legacy. We’re sending love to all of his family and his nearest and dearest.

May he rest in love and grace and power and song.
