I’m honored to be in conversation with Armenian filmmaker and multimedia artist Emily Mkrtichian, whose debut feature There Was, There Was Not opens in theaters today.

We speak about the act of witnessing, and about the ways story, body, and land carry memory across generations. Emily’s film follows four women from Artsakh, a historically and ethnically Armenian land, through invasion and eventual ethnic cleansing. The film poetically weaves their daily lives and gestures of care into a living archive of a lost homeland.

Emily’s timely film touches something very deep, showing how art carries what history tries to erase, how cultural lineage and beauty persist, even through rupture.

A few years ago, the visual artist and poet Alexandra Fuller reached out to me with a proposal to exchange letters in poems. It began as a playful experiment and a way to get to know one another. What unfolded was a correspondence of image, fragments from dream and ordinary life, passed between us in verse. We reflected on the betweenness of time in our personal lives and in the collective, the death of winter, the tension of being both mother and daughter, and the cycles of death and renewal in our interior worlds.

This week we read our poems aloud to one another for the very first time and reflected on our exchange for Conversations on Practice. Giving voice to the verses gave them new register and life. We were reminded of the necessity of language to have breath and resonance, and of art’s capacity to awaken presence, connection, and possibility.

Our recorded conversation picks up just after our reading. We explore the discomfort of being between and the way attention is our greatest creative currency. Alex shares a waking-dream image of a white plastic chair that invited her to sit, to notice, and respond. After the waking dream encounter, she found that very chair and carried it to the Great Salt Lake. That playful gesture seeded A Participatory Universe, a body of work on framing the in-between, an inquiry on how gaze shapes nature.

We circle around surrender and play—the way art asks us to let go and be carried by the current, the way it asks us to be remade.

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend and client Ben Mustin, an organizational ecologist, systems thinker, and facilitator for a new episode of Conversations on Practice.

Ben and I first met on Orcas Island a couple of years ago. What has always struck me about Ben is his way of meeting life with profound curiosity and openness.

In this conversation, he speaks candidly about facing the shadow of masculinity and the ways repressing the feminine created imbalance in his life and creativity. Through years of what he calls “blind practice,” he was led into deeper engagement with dreams, where he began to encounter images that asked him to surrender, to listen, and to enter into relationship with the unknown.

We talk about the unsettling presence of the anima in his dreams, a dream of a misty path that became a guiding image, and how his understanding of both masculinity and the feminine has been transformed by shadow work, the natural world, and the voices of companions like James Hillman, Ursula Le Guin, adrienne maree brown, and Octavia Butler.

Ben shows how a practice of surrender leads toward a more spacious way of being, one that is more at ease with the uncertainty of our changing world.

I sat down with artist Ceara Metlikovec to discuss her practice: a devotion to silence, sculpture, and shaping space as something sacred and alive.

In our conversation, Ceara shares her early instinct to gather materials into altars, her deep attunement to the rhythms of the natural world, and a vision she had of Georgia O’Keeffe that radically shifted her creative practice.

This is the very first episode of my new podcast, Conversations on Practice, where I’ll speak with artists, dreamers, and makers about the subtle ways practice transforms how we live, create, and imagine.

“Amidst the profound unraveling happening in our cultural spheres (a movement that will continue over the next years, birthing radical new structures of relation), grounding into the physical is imperative. The mind can no longer seek security in the old ways of being—these ways are being dismantled and renewed. Dropping into the body, accessing pleasure, being reminded of beauty, simplicity, and embodied connection, we are reminded of continuity, of that which remains beyond the shifting facade of politics, language, identities, worldviews, and authoritative frameworks and structures.”

I’m exiting the digital world for some time.

This has long been a question of mine—what possibilities dwell beyond the identities I craft for myself here?

I’m curious about diving deep into locality again, being present in my immediate world.

I want to look at my addiction to noise & remember (more fully) what is underneath it all.

Don’t get me wrong: I appreciate the digital spaces we have built together (& we have). Sure, there are algorithms and platform moderation, but our online gathering spaces are what we have made them, together.

I read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in graduate school, and I continue to carry its importance with me: the necessity to see that our technologies hold both shadow & light. The shadow grows in contempt when we make it wrong. Frankenstein, the inventor, was appalled by his otherworldly creation; it was his abandonment & horror of the creature that caused the most harm.

The digital world is a beautiful place. It’s a world of magical connection beyond physicality. Instagram, in particular, is a space where I’ve had the gift of forging friendships with many of you who I may not have met otherwise. I cherish these connections, of sharing our inner worlds.

My practice is one of recognizing the both/and nature of reality that permeates all things including our technologies. I don’t desire a world without technology. I want to become more intimate with the magic that underlies it, the magic of connection that comes from pure being, from which all other things come into being, including our technologies.

This period away is intended for me to reclaim my inner world again. To experiment with identity beyond the screen. To erase myself, again, to allow a more true version of me to emerge in real time, for me and me alone.

I wonder about performance and about who I am way underneath the deep human need for attention, validation, and response.

I want to be more self-contained, at least for some time, to fine tune my attention to the tangible, physical world around me. I want to liberate a substantial amount of energy I pour into this place.

I’ve been in play developing a new line of signature plant & flower essences to support your embodied practice. These vibrational medicines have been harvested and crafted from the magical mountains and shores I call home in California and Greece.

Essences work by way of vibrational imprint. They hold direct wisdom from the trees and flowers who generously remind us of our own innate nature. I like to say the flowers teach us to revel in our own generosity :)

These essences address specific emotional, physical, psychological, and creative blocks, helping to dissolve the distortions that hold us back in our becoming. Their imprint is one of gentle prompting, constantly inviting us back to ourselves. They help us to grow roots within the depths so we can expand and grow into our highest creative expression.

Scenes from Hydra, December 2024

We’ve been home no less than a week after a surprise month back in the states. This island is holding us in such generous ways, I feel as though I’m dreaming.

Between homeschooling my little one, client work, and creative work I’ve never been more busy, and yet I feel I am, as I told a friend recently, proliferating.

Lucia’s homeschool curriculum, set by her is this:

Violin - Pastry Studies - Food Studies - Sewing / Knitting / Crocheting - Greek - Italian

And yet I constantly worry about whether I am “getting it wrong.” We have chosen a very unconventional life (she hasn’t yet learned how to read), & yet when I listen to her tell a story with her whole body, or see the way she tunes into the living pulse of a plant, I know I can let go of any anxiety. There is no getting it wrong. by @almatetto

Do you want to dance with me? Come!

This gem from a year and half ago just made its way to me again. The pure authenticity and freedom!

Lucia is hands down my greatest teacher on this planet. She’s the best model I have for what it means to be real, to be true to oneself and fully express life. She doesn’t care who’s watching, she doesn’t worry about perfection or judgement, she doesn’t overthink, she just is.

Gracias, my little blossom. by @almatetto
