no EBT… YET! I love an aspirational business, telling the people of what’s to come. (snapped this for the food series I’m working on). Photo inside corner store, at the register where chewing gum, incense and other small items for sale are behind plexiglass. There is a handwritten sign that says “No E.B.T. YET” and “YET” is written in more pronounced, larger letters than “No E.B.T.” by @almediums

This biscuit from @shandakenbake was SO DELICIOUS, I intended to sketch it after my first bite, but forgot and kept eating it until the final bite. Second slide is my time travel sketch of the delicious biscuit I enjoyed with some blackberry jam. Crayon, colored pencil, marker, graphite on kraft paper. by @almediums

meconopsis sketching in progress (and the pansy + papaya “influencers” I’ve been dreaming of in between). I think a true meconopsis has one layer of petals pero like this is how the flower shows up in my brain, so here we are.
Slide 1: video of me drowning my favorite pastel paper in cad-orange watercolor paint. Slide 2: purple pansy in a pot. Slide 3: closeup of very ripe halved papaya with seeds. Slide 4: photo of a meconopsis poppy bloom I painted (am painting) but am letting dry now (paske mwen fatige). by @almediums

Learning and creating with @publicceramics. Image is two glazed ceramic tiles with photographs that I affixed via water slide decal. The photos are my sisters on the left, and on the right is a still of Ferid Boughedir’s 1983 “Caméra d’Afrique” where Ousmane Sembene’s quote “Je suis mois-même le soleil” is translated into English. by @almediums

My brother & I were talking about our grandpa today and he reminded me of this protest sign he carried to encourage people to boycott businesses who would not hire Black Pittsburghers. Later on, he would go on and establish #FreedomHouse. Grandpa Jim was doing community work for decades. He had been organizing for decades. He had established Freedom House as a hub for Black economic empowerment. This is why the first EMT training program was established out of his house that he had already built for Black workforce development and economic empowerment. In every telling of the Freedom House story, they talk of the heroic doctors who came to Hill district and gave Black people emergency medicine training that magically turned the program into a life-saving EMT service to the city of Pittsburgh. They skip over the part of earlier emergency training programs failing. But Freedom House succeeded at establishing both a training program and became a service provider and this is because of my grandfather. He was already doing workforce development that included trainings and getting people employed. Freedom House was addressing food insecurity, and was a meeting space to do local civil rights organizing. My grandfather would not permit training at Freedom House without lasting employment AND delivery of services to community. He wasn’t about to let anyone use him and his cachet to access Black people and move on. So Remember this: the heroic emergency medicine professionals who created the Freedom House EMT training program did so *with* local activist Jim McCoy, Jr. You will not come teach a class here that doesn’t become a job and you will not create a job here that won’t benefit all of us.
“Nxgro you have been the convenient American long enough. Spend your dollar where you can earn one”. Turns out President Jimmy Carter & I have something in common: we are staunch admirers of James McCoy, Jr. my dear grandpa. 🖤🖤🖤 by @almediums
