And if You Didn’t Know: Crushed eggshells are mostly calcium carbonate, but in raw form they break down very slowly in soil. Gardeners often “activate” or extract the minerals before fertilizing plants by using an acid. The most common additions are:

Vinegar (Most Common)

White vinegar or apple cider vinegar dissolves the calcium carbonate and creates a water-soluble calcium solution (calcium acetate) that plants can absorb more quickly.

Basic method:

1. Rinse and dry eggshells.
2. Crush or powder them finely.
3. Add vinegar until the shells are submerged.
4. It will fizz strongly — that is the calcium reacting.
5. Let sit for a few days to 1–2 weeks.
6. Dilute before watering plants.

A common dilution is:

* 1–2 tablespoons of the finished extract per gallon of water.

This is especially useful for:

* Tomatoes
* Peppers
* Squash
* Watermelons
* Cucumbers

…all of which can benefit from steady calcium availability.

Other Things People Add

* Lemon juice — similar acidic extraction.
* Compost tea — for microbial breakdown over time.
* Molasses — sometimes added to feed microbes.
* Sea moss or kelp — to broaden mineral content.
* Wood ash — not for extraction; more for adding potassium and alkalinity (but avoid combining heavily with vinegar at the same time).
