It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of @towaterfront42k legend Fauja Singh in a traffic accident in the Punjab on Sunday.
Together with the remarkable Ed Whitlock these two athletes transformed our fledgeling Toronto Waterfront Marathon event from an emerging, quality Canadian marathon to a global phenomenon. Together, Ed and Fauja put us on the world stage. Following their performances in 2003 the cover of Runner’s World magazine hailed ‘A Day for The Ages: New World Records in Berlin and Toronto!’
In 2011 he united and ignited our city when he became the first centenarian to complete a marathon. On the Monday following his 8 hour 11 minute marathon in 2011 John Derringer at Q107 proclaimed that everyone in the city was ‘The Tool of The Day’ as a 100-year-old Fauja had completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon and put the rest of us to shame!
Beyond that Fauja was a wonderful human being. With him I think I visited every gurdwara in the GTA and I especially remember Baba ji’s talks to the youth groups where he spoke of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the secret of his ginger curry.
This modest British/Punjabi Sikh farmer will always be remembered for the community hero and legend he was; the joy and celebration he bought to our community and the example he set for us all. Forever with us.
Stay tuned for updates on our celebrations of his life at TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon 2025 by @alnbrookes
