Why do goodbyes always take so long?

Why does saying “I’m leaving” never actually mean leaving?

There’s a strange little ritual we all do without noticing. The moment someone announces they’re going, nobody actually goes. One more story. One more laugh. One more goodbye.

It’s one of those everyday habits everyone’s lived through but never really stopped to name.

Turns out “I’m leaving” isn’t the end of a conversation. It’s the start of a whole new one.

Why do you think we do this? How many goodbyes does it usually take before you actually leave? Tell me below.

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow”?

I have.

For the longest time, I thought it was just procrastination.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised I wasn’t just delaying a task, I was trusting an imaginary future version of myself to deal with everything I didn’t want to face today.

This thought made me question how we think about procrastination, motivation, discipline and the idea of our “future self.”

If you’ve ever wondered:

• Why do I keep procrastinating?
• Why do I always say I’ll do it tomorrow?
• Why is my future self always more motivated?
• How do I stop putting things off?

…this thought might stay with you.

What’s the first thing that came to your mind after hearing this?

Back in July 2025, I was doing what I seem to do every time I’m in Edinburgh.

Walking.

No destination. No plan.

Just letting the city decide where I end up. I don’t know what it is about this place.

Every time I leave, I miss it.

Every time I come back, it feels like I’ve never really been away.

I stumbled across @little__capo and thought I’d take my chances with a walk-in.

Luckily, they were able to fit me in.

They found me a seat at the dining counter.

So I sat there with my drink, watching the room slowly fill up. Glasses clinked, conversations drifted past, people came and went, and the whole place had this effortless warmth about it.

It never felt rushed.

Neither did I.

Every now and then, you come across a place you know you’ll return to before you’ve even paid the bill.

Needless to say, the meal was every bit as good as the atmosphere.

I already know where I’ll be eating the next time Edinburgh feels like home again. taken in Edinburgh, United Kingdom by @alnthought

“I’ll do it tomorrow.”

It sounds like a plan.

Most of the time, it isn’t.

The book we want to read.

The phone call we’ve been meaning to make.

The idea we’ve been excited about for weeks.

They all seem to end up in the same place.

Tomorrow.

If you’ve ever struggled with procrastination, waiting for the right time or putting off the things that matter most, you’re not alone.

Maybe tomorrow isn’t just another day.

Maybe it’s where we keep all the promises we haven’t made good on yet.

Have you ever won an argument that never actually happened?

I have.

Probably more times than I’d like to admit.

We replay conversations, imagine different outcomes and think of the perfect response long after the moment has passed.

It’s easy to laugh at.

I usually do.

But the more I noticed myself doing it, the more I wondered why our minds hold onto some conversations for so long.

Maybe we’re not always talking to the other person.

Maybe we’re trying to settle something within ourselves.

If you’ve ever found yourself replaying conversations, imagining arguments or wondering why your mind won’t let certain moments go, I hope this thought feels familiar.

Have you ever caught yourself rehearsing a conversation that never actually happened?

I have.

More times than I’d like to admit.

We imagine every response, prepare the perfect reply and play the whole conversation out in our heads… even though the other person has no idea it’s happening.

It’s strange how much time we spend preparing for moments that may never arrive.

Maybe that’s why overthinking feels so exhausting.

If you’ve ever found yourself replaying conversations, imagining arguments or wondering why your mind won’t let certain thoughts go, I hope this thought feels familiar.

A few days ago, I shared a thought about adult friendships.

I thought I was talking about the people we no longer speak to.

The more I sat with it, the more I realised I was really thinking about something else.

Why do old friends suddenly cross our minds years later?

Why do some friendships stay with us, even when they’ve quietly become memories?

Most adult friendships don’t end with an argument or a goodbye.

Life gets busy.

People move.

Careers change.

Families grow.

One conversation becomes a few months of silence, and before we realise it, someone who once knew everything about our lives has become someone we hope is doing well from a distance.

I don’t think that’s the part that stays with me, though.

It’s the strange feeling of remembering who I was when they were part of my life.

Because old friendships don’t just remind us of people.

They remind us of places we used to go, conversations we forgot we remembered, and versions of ourselves that only existed during that chapter of our lives.

Maybe that’s why growing apart can feel so emotional.

We’re not only remembering an old friend.

We’re remembering a life that no longer exists.

If you’ve ever wondered why adult friendships change, why people drift apart without anything actually happening, or why an old friend can suddenly cross your mind after years of silence, I hope this thought stays with you.

I’d love to know… who came to your mind while you were reading this?

A few days ago, an old friend crossed my mind.

Not because it was their birthday.

Not because I saw an old photograph.

Just… out of nowhere.

It made me realise something I’d never thought about before.

Most adult friendships don’t end with a fight.

They don’t end with a goodbye.

They slowly become less frequent until one day, you realise someone who used to be part of your everyday life now only visits your thoughts.

I think that’s one of the hardest parts of adulthood.

Not losing friends overnight…

but slowly growing apart without either person ever deciding it.

If you’ve ever wondered why adult friendships change, why old friends suddenly cross your mind, or why growing up can sometimes feel lonely, I hope this thought stayed with you.

I’d love to know which old friendship came to your mind while reading this.
