I’d like to show you how “Alone in the Echo” evolved from an idea into a finished script.After my first semester of film school, I decided to make my first short film using everything I’d learned about writing in school and things I picked up on directing, acting, and producing.As a writer-director, I love building the world before I even write. My process is usually pretty deep figuring out my characters’ wants, needs, and flaws as well as the world but since I was also directing and acting (and procrastinating), I focused on finding the why behind the story.1. Doodle. One late night (or early morning 😂), I started doodling. I don’t draw much, but it became a visual diary. I kept coming back to this sketch whenever I thought about the film. Give yourself time to just sit in your imagination.2. Find your collaborators. I almost gave up on making anything over winter break by just not going through with what I said I’d do, until I saw @creswick posting video work. We’d only known each other through social media at this point , but I took a shot and pitched the idea. He said yes.3. Build the vision. After talking with @creswick , I filled pages with themes, motifs, titles, and random thoughts. No judging it just getting ideas out.4. Feed the idea. I watched films, YouTube videos, gathered visual references. Everything’s been done before it’s about making it yours while telling your story. There’s only one of you.5. Build the soundtrack. I always make a playlist. Film is sound just as much as image, so I need both a visual and auditory language.6. Just write the first draft. Now let your dumb chubby little elf that you hired for pennies get it on the page. 😂 Every writer knows it’s the hardest part, but once the first draft exists, everything gets easier.I can’t wait to finally share my first short film with all of you. I absolutely love being on set. I get to direct and make decisions on the fly with such a talented cast and crew. “Alone in the Echo” is finally done, thanks to the incredible post crew of @the_silence_of_the_lambridis@yspanolios @aylaseye I’ve submitted it to a few festivals to test the waters, so it can’t be released yet. I’m hopeful for a premiere, I can’t wait to share this with you!•📹 @hiddenn.filess by @alone.in.the.echo
