Congress needs to finish the job on air traffic control modernization.

ALPA's President joined Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and the Modern Skies Coalition yesterday to urge Congress to fully fund the DOT's plan, with investments in ATC infrastructure, technology, and staffing.

Give us the tools we need to keep the skies safe.

Being an airline pilot in the 1920s and 1930s was a dangerous business. Airlines pushed their pilots to the limit as air mail contracts expanded rapidly, forcing pilots to fly fatigued and in bad weather without proper equipment.

That’s why 24 pilots met at a hotel in downtown Chicago in 1931 and formed the Air Line Pilots Association with a motto that still stands today: Schedule with Safety.

For the past 95 years, @alpapilots has been a leader in strengthening aviation safety for pilots and passengers worldwide. Some of the most lifesaving aviation technologies that we consider ubiquitous today (such as TCAS and GPWS) exist largely due to ALPA’s relentless efforts to make our skies safer.

Last week I attended ALPA’s 70th Air Safety Forum in Washington D.C., an annual gathering of the industry’s aviation safety leaders to discuss and showcase recent innovations, current challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

Safety is the core of ALPA’s mission, and the Air Safety Forum was an incredible display of the people who have worked so hard to make flying the safest form of transportation. Swipe to read more about ALPA’s 70th Air Safety Forum.

ALPA President Jason Ambrosi and NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy spoke about some of today’s biggest threats to aviation safety and advocated for solutions such as ADSB-In integration, a technology that could have saved 67 lives in the PSA 5342 crash at DCA in January 2025.

The integration of ADSB-In technology in every flight deck is just one of the safety recommendations made by the NTSB in the final report of the PSA 5342 crash. One of the most striking takeaways was Chairwoman Homendy’s remarks that of the 50+ safety recommendations in the final report, only two have been accepted, and the rest have been deemed unacceptable.

Their conversation served as a reminder that improving aviation safety requires sustained cooperation among investigators, pilots, regulators, and lawmakers, and that the work does not end when an accident report is published.

The Air Safety Forum is also an opportunity for ALPA to celebrate its own pilots who have gone above and beyond. The Superior Aviat by @alpapilots

#Ad We hear a lot about what goes wrong in aviation. I want to highlight the pilots who get it right.

Frontier Airlines Captain Seybold and First Officer Desai deserve that recognition. When things went wrong, Captain Seybold hand flew the airplane while First Officer Desai handled procedures and communications. Together, they brought their flight safely back to Philadelphia.

As an airline pilot, I know how quickly that workload can build. You’re flying the airplane, working through the problem, talking to air traffic control and coordinating with the cabin crew. That takes teamwork.

I’m all for technology that makes flying safer. Automation and AI can be valuable tools, but this is exactly why I believe we still need two trained, qualified pilots in the cockpit. Two people sharing the workload, checking each other and making decisions when it matters most.

I’m partnering with @alpapilots to highlight these pilots and their Superior Aviating Award. Stories like theirs deserve attention too. ✈️

“Pick the best of both and move forward.”

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy and ALPA President Capt. Jason Ambrosi are in lock step that Congress must move forward on aviation safety legislation that takes the best parts of the Senate-passed ROTOR Act and the House-passed ALERT Act.

The final bill must:

✅ Mandate integrated ADS-B In for all aircraft, including military helicopters operating in shared, congested airspace

✅ Include the rest of the NTSB’s recommendations from its Potomac midair collision investigation report

This tragedy was preventable.

Following the release of the U.S. Army's report on the PSA Flight 5342 midair collision, ALPA President Capt. Jason Ambrosi renewed ALPA's call for Congress to require integrated ADS-B In technology on civilian and military aircraft and nationwide ADS-B Out transmission by military aircraft.

Congress made a down payment. The work isn't done.

Airline pilots are flying 21st-century airplanes through a 20th-century air traffic control system. From the flight deck, we've watched it fall behind for decades. Ask any pilot what it's like when the frequency goes quiet, or when a cut cable stops traffic at some of the busiest airports in the country.

We're urging Congress to pass the Modern Skies Act and fund the rest of the job: ATC, towers, terminals, and infrastructure.

"It's time for action, action that was promised months ago."

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy delivered a passionate keynote at our Air Safety Forum, calling for urgent action on the board's Potomac midair collision recommendations.

Congress must pass aviation safety legislation that includes an integrated ADS-B In requirement for commercial airplanes, a key piece of the ROTOR Act and a top NTSB recommendation. by @alpapilots

He's an airline pilot who still spends his free time in the sky. 🎈✈️

Capt. Chris Sabia, @psa_pilots MEC Chair, flies a CRJ700 for his airline. Off the clock, he's flying a hot-air balloon.

Sabia has owned Kansas City Aerosports since 1997, with a fleet of five balloons. The best known is the Wonder Bread Cameron Z-70, which visits 17 to 18 cities a year from May to October, from Tulsa to Lakeland, Fla. This year, they're at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta too!

"It doesn't matter if you're a little kid or a big one, when somebody sees a hot-air balloon, they just love it." 💛

Members of the Executive Board heard a special presentation from former ALPA president and U.S. representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization Capt. Duane Woerth, who shared memories of his leadership during 9/11 – from being called into the Oval Office and safely guiding every plane to the ground to serving on former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta’s Rapid Response Team on Aircraft Security, discussing funding to recover and deciding what day to fly again.

Woerth served as president during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and shared with the Executive Board the tough decisions made during aviation’s darkest hours. by @alpapilots

Good communication is key to our success at the negotiating table, in grievances, and in the day-to-day work at our pilot groups. We held our first Communications Summit in nearly two decades to bring leaders and communicators from across ALPA to share ideas, lessons, and resources between pilot groups.

With digital products, social media, and paid ad options constantly evolving, our industry-leading communications team worked with MECs on how to reach their members, however they consume information about their union. We’re always updating and expanding how we reach our members to continue building a unified and connected ALPA. by @alpapilots
