Thank you, Dolly. by @alphabetofwrongdoing

Having some wifi woes in the mountains and lost this last post so leaving this announcement here again for those who may have mist: We are deeply ecstatic to be a part of the Invisible Colleges’ first ever virtual festival happening on July 12th. Aligning authors, artists scholars and mystics from divergent lineages for ‘conversation around the Tarot, and the enduring influence of chance and divination in avant-garde art and practice’ A dream within in a dream…for us this is like being asked to be the musical guests of SNL if the cast and crew were fueled by fluid poetry. Not to be mist!!!🌬️🌹🌹🌹🌹@invisiblecollegeofficial @arianareines @bodyspill #invisible #college #tarot #mystery by @alphabetofwrongdoing

Today at 2 PM. Daniela Gesundheit is a vocalist, composer, and cantor whose work bridges ancient tradition and contemporary song. Known for her ethereal voice - described by Feist as “clear glass” - she brings intimacy and emotional weight to centuries-old Hebrew prayers, making them resonate with the immediacy of modern pop. Her album Alphabet of Wrongdoing was sparked when songwriter Jennifer Castle invited her to open a show with a cappella prayers, the first time she performed Jewish liturgy outside ritual. Reimagining the heavy prayers of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for secular audiences, the album circles themes of forgiveness, mortality, and reckoning, offering what poet Alan Felsenthal calls “restor[ing] dignity to existence through music.” Praised by Sunday Times as “extraordinary,” by Hey Alma as “sublime,” and by WNYC as a “favorite discovery,” her music moves listeners regardless of background. Admired by peers like Maggie Nelson, Martha Wainwright, and Claudia Dey, Gesundheit continues to create performances that are timeless, intimate, and profoundly moving.

Hi Friends,

How are you holding up?

It has been five years since Alphabet of Wrongdoing first emerged digitally.

It’s heartbreaking how the pieces on this album, reimagined ancient Jewish penitential prayers exploring collective grief, culpability, and forgiveness, seem to sing themselves louder and louder in my ear as each day passes. The texts and melodies have a bravado and brokenness all at once, as though the songs themselves are stunned by the act of being sung under such ominous skies.

Love and gloom, that’s the dance right now, is it not?

Leaning into love, here is a way to be together.

Love,
Daniela

Whale Song Workshop returns this afternoon with pizza from @lindforsfarms.

Whale Song: a Workshop is a response to and a decade of affectionate correspondence and collaboration between Daniela Gesundheit (@alphabetofwrongdoing) and bioacoustics researcher Katy Payne (Songs of the Humpback Whale). A trained musician, Katy listened to thousands of hours of recordings of humpback whale singing and found form where others heard noise. With Pink Dolphins (@pinkdolphins.web) as our sonic guardians, we will listen and vocalize together as we recreate a primary experience of the compositional techniques and structures at play in the humpbacks’ complex song.
The cool blue underwater feeling of Healing Force is the perfect stand-in ocean basin for apprenticing ourselves to the largest broadcasting mammals on the planet— humpback whales. As humpbacks simulcast their continuous composition, they listen attentively to their peers, incorporating the innovations that they hear around them into their shared, living song. Musicians especially geek out on what humpbacks are up to once they are privy. In this moment when deep, attuned listening is at a premium, what might we learn about group identity, innovation, and empathy from these marine masters?
Pink Dolphins (Christina Marie Karr + Lillian Doyle) open, using keys and flutes to generate pre/post apocalyptic aural environments.

How our world is hurting. It’s time to consult our marine mammal maestros. It always has been time, it always will be time. Especially after Los Angeles’s death dance with flames, we need to remember and re-encounter water, to learn from its inhabitants.

The cool blue underwater feeling of Healing Force is the perfect stand-in ocean basin for a day-into-night of apprenticing ourselves to the largest broadcasting mammals on the planet— humpback whales. Whale Song: a Workshop is a response to and continuation of a decade of affectionate correspondence and collaboration I have fostered with beloved bioacoustics researcher Katy Payne (Songs of the Humpback Whale). Hineni 5785

here I am, impoverished of deeds

shaken and fearful

even though I am neither proper nor worthy

I have come to stand before you and plead

for the people who trusted me

mother of each of my ancestors, in succession

mild, compassionate, womb-like one

god of the god-wrestlers

formidable and magnificent

I have been sent, seeking compassion

you, you, you, who attends to prayer

Hineni 5785
Daniela Gesundheit

The Hineni prayer is recited by the cantor on the day of atonement while walking from the back of the room to the front. It is sung on behalf of everyone present, and summons the fortitude and resilience necessary to voice the deepest desires of a room full of people gathered together to examine the contents of their hearts.
May everyone know safety, and soon.

Excerpts adapted from the translation of the Hineni prayer found in the Chochmat HaLev Machzor.
